It’s funny. Men’s fashion advice seems to be divided into two categories: tips on nailing the smart look or those that tell us how to do our hair by ourselves so we don’t have to spend money going to the hairdresser or a barber shop. In any case, material on what we can do with our personal style is relatively limited. It’s not like we need a decalogue of Do’s and Don’ts, but a little push can always help.
Reality is often stranger than fiction. This means that some men screw up dressing, like the protagonist of Django Unchained, who, in a failed attempt to look manly and elegant, chooses a flashy suit with lacework. So instead of commanding respect, this fellow looks ridiculous and silly. Choosing the wrong outfit can be more common that you’d think. Sometimes we are seduced by passing trends like the eighties’ mullet hair, that was supposed to make men look tough, without losing the status that bulky hair lost in that same decade.
I know, the eighties were 30 years ago, but these kinds of mistakes continue to pop up, and some look even more ridiculous than our parents’ bulky hair.

Frosted tips or curls
Every boyband, like NSYNC or Backstreet Boys, there was always one guy who always wore his hair like this. And just when we thought that this trend was dead, guys started to dye their ends blond and reenact the style. This is a proof that bad taste can transcend generations.

Drop Crotch pants
Created originally by the Himalayan people to protect themselves from the bitter cold, this piece of clothing took the streets by storm, notwithstanding the climate. Yeah, sometimes trends can work out of their context, but this is definitely not the case.

Romphim
Probably, there isn’t anything as democratic as fashion, but sometimes in an attempt to adapt old-style clothing to the current times some designers make great mistakes. I’m not sure whether they wanted to come up with a jumpsuit or romper, but what I am sure is this is one of the worst pieces of clothing this has seen so far.

Low-cut shirt
Even if everything in fashion is born from experimentation, sometimes we must accept that some traditional things were invented for a reason, for example, shirt’s buttons. Wearing something like this could indeed give you a fresh look, but if the only thing you want is to show off your chest, you’ll look pathetic.

Over the top beard styles
About six years ago, beards became the symbol par excellence of male sensuality. For this reason, more and more men started to take care of their facial hair with special shampoos or waxes. Everything was fine… until the world went crazy and started to dye beards in bright, shiny colors, or braiding them.

Tribal tattoos
The nineties saw the boom of tribal tattoos. They were very popular, especially among men you would see at the gym. They were the best way to show off your triceps.

Remember: there is a blurry line between experimenting and a ridiculous look that will make others laugh at you. Since we don’t have many sources of advice, the best thing for us is to be careful and trust our instinct instead of transitory fashion trends we see in the dresser.
