We are way past the decade of the 1950s, when attractive meant whatever Hollywood said it meant, and set of standards that made everyone who didn’t look like their ideal feel inferior. We are getting to a time of diversity and representation. We see more and more faces like ours in beauty magazines and shows. That is why it is so important to point out that People Magazine has included the face of a Mexican indigenous woman, Yalitza Aparicio, as one of the most beautiful persons in the world.
After her performance in Cuaron’s Roma, she won the New Hollywood Award, the no. 1 spot in the List of Top Actresses in Time Magazine, and an Oscar nomination, among others.
Besides Yalitza, there are a few other familiar names, such as Kate del Castillo, who became famous on Mexican TV and recently was seen in Ingobernable, Eiza Gonzalez, who made an appearance in Baby Driver and is now making a name for herself in the industry.
There are other Latinx names in the list, too: Natti Natasha, from Dominican Republic, and Gina González, winner of an Emmy, of Puerto Rican descent, and who stars in Jane The Virgin, a show that has been crashing stereotypes for Latinx productions in America.
Although the full list has not been released, we eagerly expect to find more Latinx names in it. People’s editor, Armando Correa, will publish the list on May 2nd. Past editions have also included Latinx people, such as Shakira, Thalía, Paulina Rubio, Lucero, and others.
