10 Arctic Monkeys Songs You Probably Dedicated To Your High School Crush

May 18, 2017

How many songs did it take for you to realize that person you thought was so special was unworthy of them? It was probably in high school or middle school. That's the age when we usually make our first musical and romantic discoveries. Luckily, the years make us wiser. Or at least, that's what we repeat to ourselves every time we have no idea of what the hell is happening in our lives. Today you wouldn't dedicate a song unless you were getting married, because your relationship with music has become more intimate. You know that dedicating a song is an art, not just a love confession.

It's not all bad, because those songs also brought us amazing moments. There's no reason to attach the face of a person to good old musical memories. Only 10 years ago, the Arctic Monkeys reached radio stations and stopped being just a MySpace band. With their noisy but melodic sound, they became the favorite band of all those teenagers that started to experience heartbreaks. So you know you probably dedicated one of the following songs to your teenage crush:

Let's start from the latest material to the oldest, shall we? And just think of what that person really deserved, whether an everlasting promise or an insult coming out from Alex Turner's lips.
-
"I Wanna be Yours"
If you like your coffee hot
Let me be your coffee pot
You call the shots babe
I just wanna be yours.

This last song from the Arctic Monkeys' last album was inspired by John Cooper Clarke. This postmodern, sickening, and decadent poetry is something you've probably dedicated to that special person, or intended to so. Even though it's kind of old, AM is an album that shows the band's geniality. Let's hope they release something new soon.

-
"Knee Socks"
And I thought you might be mine
In a small world on an exceptionally rainy Tuesday night
In the right place and time.

Another song from AM. This is their record with the sexiest songs, and "Knee Socks" is definitely the highest point of sensuality in the album. Even if you knew that your relationship wouldn't last forever, you would dedicate this song to that person you had a great time with. Although it was a passing infatuation, they still make you smile whenever they come to mind.

"Love is a Laserquest"
Now I can't think of air without thinking of you
I doubt that comes as a surprise
And I can't think of anything to dream about
I can't find anywhere to hide.

Unlike the previous songs, "Love is a Laserquest" is about an old flame that comes back to your mind in random moments. They can ruin your day if they bring back a particular memory. This might not be the best song from Arctic Monkeys. It lacks the cynicism and confidence they show in AM, but it doesn't sound as naïve as their first works.

-
"Only Ones Who Know"
And I bet she told a million people that she'd stay in touch
Well, all the little promises – they don't mean much
When there's memories to be made
And I hope you're holding hands by New Years Eve.

This band's ballad could become a new genre on its own. It is not as deep as it was decades ago, but even though it is about trite things, the song is timeless and really conveys how we felt back in those days. Maybe that relationship wasn't the best, but it meant the entire world to us. When someone promises to keep in touch but ends up lying, sorrow is enough to write a song.

-
"505"
But I crumble completely when you cry
It seems like once again you've had to greet me with goodbye
I'm always just about to go and spoil a surprise
Take my hands off of your eyes too soon.

This is one of the best songs by the Arctic Monkeys. It is hard to dedicate a song like this one. If that special someone didn't have the guts to ask you to leave or stay, after so many stolen kisses and confiding gazes, this was probably one of the songs that helped you gather enough strength to leave. Or to stay just for a little bit longer.

-
"I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor"
I bet that you look good on the dance floor
I don't know if you're looking for romance or
I don't know what you're looking for.

Ten years ago, Ipods, MySpace, messy hair, and the emo movement were trendy. Those who refused to enlist to that heap, listened to the Arctic Monkeys while we watched them dance and tell stories about robots or alienated societies like the one in 1984. Very few of us dedicated this song. You have to be young, naïve, and stupid to think that the phrase "You're an explosion (you're dynamite)" sounds awesome. Ironically, sometimes it did work.

-
"The Bakery"
And I wish I'd seen you in the bakery
But if I'd seen you in the bakery
You probably wouldn't have seen me.

The band wrote this song before moving to the United States and losing a significant part of its British identity, so the song is encompassed by a specific context. Any 15-year old who listens to it will find themselves reflected there. The song deals with the insecurity and fear we sometimes feel but finally overcome once we decide to stand up and face it.

-
"Baby I'm Yours"
Baby, I'm yours
And I'll be yours until the stars fall from the sky,
Yours until the rivers all run dry
In other words, until I die.

This is my favorite romantic song from the band. Its backstory is really touching (Barbara Lewis, Jodi Miller, and Cher have performed it). This song is perfect if you want to dedicate something endearing and sincere. There are no puns or unfulfilled promises. Alex Turner wrote about the purest devotion someone could feel for a person.

-
"Mardy Bum"
Can't we laugh and joke around
Remember cuddles in the kitchen
Yeah, to get things off the ground.

A few years ago, this particular piece wasn't so widely known, but now it is considered one of the first songs that showed the geniality of the band. The distinctive indie sound from those days and Alex Turner's teenage poetry were truly captivating. Even if you were never in the kitchen cuddling with your loved one, you probably did imagine a similar situation in secret.

-
"No Buses"
Lady where's your love gone?
I was looking but can't find it anywhere
They always offer when there's loads of love around
But when you're short of some it's nowhere to be found.

Cry, beg for forgiveness, or bawl just to make them stay. You think you understand why they left, but you actually have no idea. The only thing left for you is to find a song that makes sense of the complete nonsense that you were.

-

To remember is to weep again. Many people will deem the band as overrated, but for others their songs were the best companion in times of solitude, confusion, and teenage sorrow. As far as we know, we can't wait for the Arctic Monkeys to come back this year with new material. Meanwhile, why don't we listen to more songs by our favorite band:
