There was a time when life was simple and anything was possible. A couple of cardboard boxes could easily turn into a magic castle. An old sheet could become a superhero cape only by tying it around our neck. We didn't know how to take life seriously, so playing was the only way we knew how to engage with the world around us.

In the past we were showered with all the love and tenderness our family and friends could give. They were our shield to protect us from life's blows. We knew how to cherish things for what they were. We lived in the here and now, and that was enough to make us happy. The words "always" and "never" didn't exist in our vocabulary, since there was no need to worry about the future.

It's true that life events and uncertainties take their toll on relationships and pull us away little by little from the people we've loved. Despite everything that may have happened afterwards, we are still able to remember the most important thing we learned back then: there is a kind of love that doesn't fade away with time. One we can always strengthen regardless of how old we get. Berlin-based Portuguese illustrator Carolina Buzio proves this through her colorful work. The purpose of her illustrations is to evoke those sweet moments of childhood, as well as capturing embraces and tokens of affection in adult couples to make them last forever.

Everlasting love can only exist if it is untethered and selfless. This means putting the wellbeing of the person you love first. This does not mean you have to neglect yourself or let your partner take advantage of you, but rather to keep your ego in check, so you are able to trust and love without unnecessary demands, attachments, and fears.

To love means to become each other's accomplice, to work together, side by side, to face any challenge that life may throw at you. The core of deep love is an unshakeable friendship, as it is what strengthens a relationship the most. Mutual trust builds strong bridges that are not easily destroyed. Mature couples have faith in their love for each other and feel no need to demand any kind of reassurance from each other.

Many people mistakenly believe that in order to be loved they must give up their identities and merge into one entity with their partner. They couldn't be more wrong. To share your life with somebody is to retain your own individuality while both of you are enriched by experiences you create together. If you gave up your identity, you would no longer be that person your partner fell in love with. Love grows if you know how to nurture and protect it. Sincerity and respect is the key. If these elements are not present, all embraces are meaningless.

We're only human, so we hold contrasting dualities within us that most of the time we're not aware of. It is important to accept our strengths as well as our quirks. Once we do this, we'll no longer be alone to face life's hardships. We'll also support our partner to do the same. When true love exists, an embrace can heal, protect, and give shelter, not only physically but also emotionally.
