If you clicked on this article, you're probably one of those curious and insightful souls that are fond of knowledge and beauty. What you are about to see is a portrait collection of prominent Modernist artists. But before that, we must ask: What is modernism? Why was it so important?
The nineteenth and twentieth centuries were a turning point for all kinds of artistic disciplines. In the past, one single movement ruled the roost for a certain amount of time and all artist had to obey its commands, but with modernism this became impossible. It was a time of great conceptual revolutions. Artistic approaches and different styles were defined and redefined in a heart beat, leading to the creation of a vast number of original artistic genres shaped by the unique perspective of each artist. Although modern art began around 1850 with the arrival of realism, there were previous artists like Goya and Courbet who started to break with traditional conventions of art. They sought to capture reality in their paintings instead of embellishing an artificial image.
So, if you're ready, why don't you try to name the 20 painters who appear below?
Spoiler: none of them are Frida Kahlo
“Color is the keyboard, the eyes are the harmonies, and the soul is the piano with many strings. The artist is the hand that plays, touching one key or another, to cause vibrations in the soul.”
Giorgio de Chirico
“The beautiful, which is perhaps inseparable from art, is not after all tied to the subject, but to the pictorial representation. In this way and in no other does art overcome the ugly without avoiding it.”
“I don't think about art when I'm working. I try to think about life.”
“Art is an adventure into an unknown world, which can be explored only by those willing to take risks.”
“Fantasy, abandoned by reason, produces impossible monsters; united with it, she is the mother of the arts and the origin of marvels.”
“A picture must possess a real power to generate light, and for a long time now I've been conscious of expressing myself through light, or rather in light.”
“I could be in any part of the world and my painting style would remain the same because it stems from very particular feelings."
“I look at a nude. There are myriads of tiny tints. I must find the ones that will make the flesh on my canvas live and quiver”.
“Art is a weapon that penetrates the eyes, the ears, the deepest and subtlest human feelings.”
"Color! What a deep and mysterious language, the language of dreams.”
“What you do when you paint, you take a brush full of paint, get paint on the picture, and you have faith."
“I like to pretend that my art has nothing to do with me.”
"Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art."
