May 19, 2017|Maria Isabel Carrasco
They are everywhere! On the subway, when I go to the mall, when I lose my time on Instagram or Facebook, basically everywhere. You know what I mean: biker jackets. All of a sudden this statement piece has become a basic item everybody has. Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against them. I actually own a couple I love. It’s just that it caught my attention how this piece has gone from being mainstream, to the main item of certain underground styles and groups, and once again mainstream. It's true that the essence of the jacket, the fact that it's made with leather, has that vibe of rebelliousness we all want to convey. Of course, I grabbed my phone and looked on Pinterest some ideas to wear this iconic piece in an original way (oh, the irony). So, I found hundreds of pins with ladies wearing almost the same jacket with dresses, skirts, pants, shorts, and many other types of leather clothes. Then another deep philosophical question came into my mind: how come we associate leather with rock and roll, goths, and many other underground movements, and not with sophistication or elegance?
If you think about it, when we see leather packagings when we buy something. or leather linings in cars or homes, we think of elegance, and most of the time it’s related to masculinity and manhood. On the other hand, when it comes to "femininity," leather is usually associated with an image of sensuality (mostly related to BDSM), or it makes us think of gothic vamps and punk rockers. And it’s fine. But what happens if I don’t relate to any of these styles and still want to show my rebellious essence in a sophisticated way? Sophistication is not a synonym of formality, nor does it depend on social status. There are many ways to be elegant without wearing formal wear or buying super expensive items. In the same way, there are many ways to rock leather clothing and still be elegant. For that reason, here are 7 ways you can show your inner strength through leather outfits.
Coats and Jackets
Of course, we have to start with the leather jacket. As I said, there's nothing wrong with it, and it looks great with dresses and pumps. However, if you're kind of tired of people wearing almost the same looks as you, try these coats and jackets with interesting cuts that will definitely stand out in this era of biker and bomber jackets.
Tops and Blouses
Thanks to the solidity of the fabric, a leather blouse or shirt will shape your look. Most of them come in solid or neutrals, making them easy to adapt to almost any style. If you want something more elaborate, try laser cut blouses with intricate designs.
Who doesn't remember that episode in Friends when Ross gets a pair of leather pants? Basically, that anecdote made me hate leather pants for a long time. But actually, nowadays, most of these items are made with faux leather which, besides being beneficial for the planet and animals, is not as uncomfortable. You can try these amazing cuts that will definitely give you that perfect balance between sophistication and empowerment.
These are great pieces that will make you look very stylish. Thanks to their cut and waist, these skirts fit any body shape. Besides that, its flow will elongate your figure, making you look more stylized. They come in many colors and types of leather, so you can play with textures and combinations.
This might sound a little far-fetched, but just look at them! I'd definitely wear some leather gloves during fall and winter, and what about that sort of outlaw, leather bandana? It definitely brings some light into the outfit and it makes it look very original. Think outside the box, not everything is purses and belts.
This particular skirt cut has become a very fashionable element in the past years. They've gone from being the classic business clothing to a casual statement. The great thing about these skirts is that they help shape and elongate the body. You can go for more sober colors if you want a subtle look or play with colors and textures, like metallics, for a more audacious outfit.
Finally, dresses are the clothing most people relate to sophistication. Just remember Audrey Hepburn in her iconic Breakfast at Tiffany's black dress. Well, what about a very similar cut, but in leather? It's daring and elegant at the same time; However, it's not the only one. There are plenty types and cuts you can get and still look radiantly elegant.
As you can see, there are many ways to wear leather without falling into stereotypes. Actually, we should stop making those associations and start wearing whatever we want. Just be true to your style and try to add something of yourself to make it unique.
