She would even lend her favorite grandson her private Scottish house to give Charles and Camilla some privacy.
A lot has been said about the failed relationship between Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Even more, has been said about the Prince’s affair with his now-wife Camilla Parker Bowles. But how the Crown in general, and some of its members, reacted to that romance is not that spoken about. Turns out, Charles and Camilla were aided by no other than the Queen Mother herself.
It's not that the Queen Mother supported the relationship per se. Although the theory that she broke Camilla and Charles up before he met Diana is false, indeed, the Royal Family didn't really approve of Camilla becoming the heir to the throne's wife. So why would Queen Mother help the affair later on? Simple, she wanted to avoid any sort of scandal.
According to close sources, when Princess Diana and Prince Charles got separated, they remained married but Charles started seeing Camilla once again. Diana became suspicious about the relationship, and although everybody lied to her about the affair, she was strongly considering getting a divorce. To the eyes of the Queen Mother, this was unthinkable. She tried talking to Diana with whom she had a cordial relationship at the beginning.
Let's remember that the Queen Mother and Diana's family were acquainted and it was her who suggested Diana as a great candidate for Charles. However, as time passed, and Diana started rebelling against the tight protocols of the Crown, the relationship between Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon and Diana Spenser started to crackle.
For the Queen Mother divorce was out of the question. When her brother-in-law, King Edward VIII abdicated the throne to marry Wallis Simpson, she and her husband King George VI, worked really hard to clean the image of the monarchy and placed themselves as ethical “role models.” For that reason, any sort of scandal was to be avoided. To do so, she decided to help her grandson Charles to get away with his affair without anyone finding out, especially Diana.
According to Royal commentators, the Queen Mother would constantly lend the couple her private Scottish home as a safe place for them to meet privately. It was working for them at first, it's even said that Camilla didn't really mind about having a secret relationship since she wasn't really ambitious with getting the position of Princess. So, when Diana found out about the relationship and asked for the divorce, the Queen Mother wouldn't understand why she wouldn't just accept that Camilla was Charles' mistress as princes and kings had done so throughout history. Still, Charles wasn't content with that either. He loved Camilla and wanted to give her her place.
What really ended the relationship between Diana and the Queen Mother, was the Princess' tell-all book Diana: Her True Story, published in 1992. She believed she had no right to expose the family that way and, by doing so, she had brought disgrace to the entire institution. It's even said that when Diana and Charles officially separated, she asked her crew to never mention her name again.
