When life isn’t forthcoming with blessings and gifts, we tend to cower away in a pit of despair. Fearful of facing the sun, not daring to come out from under the covers. A dark cloud hovers over our heads showering us with pitiful thoughts that work to drag us deeper into the unpleasantness of our minds.
When we reach that point, when negativity becomes the go-to and there seems to be no light at the end of the very dark tunnel, we must find it in ourselves to appreciate the small things in life.
In times of uncertainty, when you find yourself crashing into walls everywhere you turn, losing that fire that burned inside you and made every day worth facing, pause the never-ending stream of thoughts. Find a moment, even a split-second of time where the pitter-patter of rain draws you back to a hot summer day. Allow the feeling of relaxation and nostalgia to break through the haunting thunderclouds and allow the sun to penetrate.
Bask in the coolness of a cold dessert on your tongue. A warm mug of hot chocolate on a cold winter’s day. A cool breeze on an uncomfortably warm day. A friendly comment or gesture from a stranger. A comfy bed to fall asleep in after a long day. A decadent meal when famished. Air flowing through your lungs. The rhythmic beating of your heart. Your existence.
Look past all that you haven’t achieved, all that’s wrong in your life, not the right way up, and find something – anything – small worth valuing. Grow from your ability to take life’s big curveballs with an invincible stance.
It takes an immense amount of patience with yourself and a deep-seated need to be optimistic to appreciate these small things. It isn’t a magical cure that will immediately erase self-pity and doubt. It’s a weapon, a tool, a helpful object in life’s toolbox. A means of creating a dependency on positivity.
Life can be terrifying, and along the way, you may find yourself on your knees, but there's always a possibility that you'll get right back on your feet.
