What We Think About Kylie Jenners New Birthday Collection

Once again, after less than a month, we have another new collection by makeup mogul Kylie Jenner and her Kylie Cosmetics brand, but is it worth it? We review the Kylie Jenner Birthday Makeup Collection.

The youngest member of the Kardashian-Jenner clan just turned 21, and to celebrate her coming of age, her millionaire brand released a huge birthday collection with many different products, including an eyeshadow palette, some of her popular lip sets, a highlighter, and many other goodies. As it happens with everything Kylie Cosmetics releases (basically every month), people all over the internet got really excited about the theme and products in the collection, so we had to talk about it. To be honest with you, though I believe it’s amazing how her brand has grown so much in such a short time, I’m not a huge fan of her products for many reasons, the most important being the lack of consistency when it comes to price and quality. In most cases, you’re actually paying (a lot!) for the name and the hype, but not really for the quality of the products.

I could go on about this for hours, so let’s just take a look at the collection and see if it's as amazing as it sounds or just a flop, like some of her last ones. First things first, the whole collection's Mega Bundle will run you $415 USD, which is really a lot of money when you think about it, though it does include a lot of products. You’ll be getting the following:

Eyeshadow Palette ($65)

3 liquid glitter shadows ($20 each)

Set of 6 lipsticks ($90, $17 each)

3 of her famous lip kits ($30 each)

A mini set of six liquid lipsticks ($36)

1 lip trio ($36)

1 powder highlighter ($28)

1 makeup bag ($32)

Sipping Beauty Pressed Powder Palette

The most anticipated product from the collection is naturally the eyeshadow palette called "Sipping Beauty." It has 21 different colors with fun names that allude to drinking, partying, and bad decisions overall (there’s even a shade named like that). The color range goes from light neutral mattes and shimmers, to reddish hues, intense dark colors and a couple of bright pinks. As you could see above, the palette alone retails for 65 dollars (probably her most expensive one so far), but to be fair, the quality of this one is really great. All the colors are really pigmented, they transfer so nicely on the eye, and more importantly, they’re easy to work and blend (which isn’t really the case with some of her palettes). If you’re into these hues, you’ll love it; if not, you’re going to feel very limited as to what you can create with the statement colors.

Glitter Eyes

Perhaps the most interesting thing about her collection is the three different liquid eyeshadows. They have a metallic formula that makes them great to wear as toppers or on their own for a more down-to-earth look. The three colors are: "Eat Cake" (a rose gold metallic), "Born to Sparkle" (olive gold), and "Fine Wine" (a purple-fuchsia hue). These are really great, and probably the best of the entire collection, not only because of their pigmented metallic formula, but also because they’re so easy to wear and match, not to mention that they dry fast, which is great to avoid smudging.

Lipstick set

When I first saw this, I was really excited about the packaging, but other than that, they’re not really that special. They are all kind of common and regular colors you can actually get from every single brand on the market and for a better price. The thing here is that her matte lipsticks don’t really have the wow factor when it comes to the formula. They tend to be kind of dry, which I don’t love. But to be fair, though they aren’t anything new, if you love the formula, these basic colors are really pretty. They come in the following shades: "Birthday Behavior" (cherry), "Glam" (mauve pink), "August" (pale nude), "Rumor" (intense dark plum), "Rager" (vibrant coral), and "Flirtini" (brownish pink).

Champagne Showers Highlighter

Last but not least, we have Kylie Cosmetics’ new highlighter called "Champagne Showers." This one comes alone and in a really big size for all those who stick only to one particular highlighter. The color is really great for lighter skin tones, though I don’t see it working for darker complexions. I have an olive skin tone, and it looked a bit too white and chalky on me, so I would consider this before getting it. Now, if your highlighter game is more subtle, you’ll love this one. If you love a dramatic highlighter moment, you're going to find this frustrating.

In conclusion, the collection might look appealing because of the packaging's birthday theme, but to be honest, like with basically all makeup collections, not everything in it is worth getting. The Birthday collection isn’t really innovative, and it's not worth 415 bucks. If you want to get your hands on something, I’d stick with the eye products, meaning the palette (if you’re into the colors) and the liquid shadows. As for the lip products, they aren’t new, though there are nice hues in there. Besides that, all the fuss will be over in a couple weeks when she releases something else, so I’d really stick to those new and fun products in the collection.
