This new version of the Hasbro classic honors women through their new character, a smart female investor.

At a time when there’s more awareness about gender roles in society, Hasbro announced this week their new release: a new version of the traditional Monopoly board game with a few differences, like women making more money than men. In addition, the iconic businessman with a top hat and monocle has been replaced by his niece, a powerful investor.
Unlike her uncle, the real estate tycoon with a voracious appetite for profit, Ms. Monopoly’s mission is investing in projects by female entrepreneurs. In this new edition, players won’t be buying houses or buildings, but rather inventions created by women, like WiFi or solar heating.
The game wants to spread a message on equality
Rules also establish that female players get more money than men before the game starts, and each time they cross the “go” box, they’ll get compensation from the gender wage gap women experience in real life. In the US, women who work full-time earn around 81 percent of what men make, according to the US Department of Labor.
In the press release, Hasbro explained that “if men play their cards right, they can make more money too." There’s also another adjustment: the tokens that traditionally included a car, an iron, or a shoe, are now replaced by a notebook, a plane, and a watch.
“Ms Monopoly was created to inspire everybody by highlighting that women have always defied the status quo.”
This new Monopoly board game will be released later this month and will retail for $19.99 USD.
