From Oscar nominees to newcomers, here's a list of the best Latino promises in acting for 2019.
It’s safe to say Hollywood has diversified as of lately and that Latinos are leading the way, especially with Mexican directors Alejandro González Iñárritu, Guillermo del Toro, and Alfonso Cuarón basically dominating the Oscars this decade. We already know and love actors like Karla Souza, Gael García, and Sofía Vergara but take a look at this list for some of the newcomers and some of the ones that will hit it big in 2019:
Diego Boneta killed it in 2018 by playing Mexico’s music icon Luis Miguel on Netflix’s biopic of the same name. The show focuses on the singer’s early career and mysterious disappearance of his mother. Keep an eye on this dude because he’s destined for big stuff.
Yalitza Aparacio is the Oscar-nominated star of Roma (2018), this was her first role and completely nailed it. It goes without saying that her performance is groundbreaking and we hope that her a long and successful career.
Marina de Tavira
Another Oscar-nominee for her role in Roma (2018), Marina is a decidedly more seasoned actress than Yalitza, but her stunning performance is all you need to see to know she’s in for the long haul. As her name turns the World upside down, we’ll be seeing more of her this year.
Edgar Ramírez has been around for a while and we love him for it. This year, though, he may well have reached his highpoint as Gianni Versace in The Assassination of Gianni Versace (2018) for which he received an Oscar nomination. Here’s to hoping.
Lin Manuel Miranda
What’s he cooking? Lin Manuel Miranda is the biggest talent, not only among Latinos, but among talents of any kind. He wrote the music, book and lyrics of Broadway hit Hamilton, and simply seems unstoppable. Look out for this guy because he’ll most certainly break any records and land all the roles. Oh, and yes, we loved him in Mary Poppins Returns (2018).
Eiza González started young in Mexican telenovelas but has established a respectable career in Hollywood as of lately. She’s now reaching for bigger and more important roles, like in Welcome to Marwen (2018) with Steve Carell.
Juan Pablo Zurita
Juanpa rose to fame in Mexico for his hilarious Vines, but landed a role as Luis Miguel’s brother. He was amazing in it, so… yeah, look out.
Tenoch Huerta is Narcos' (2015) costar. We’ve loved Diego Luna for a while, but Tenoch recently swept us under our feet with his charm and good looks. He’s destined for greatness.
The young star of Netflix remake of One Day At Time (2017) is only twenty years old and super talented, with her entire career ahead of her. Her role in the show really harkens back to the experience of being a Latino in the United States. Oh, did I mention she shares credit with Academy Award winner and film legend Rita Moreno? Savage!
Horacio García Rojas
Horacio wowed us all in Diablero, Netflix’s new series about devil forces and a badass priest. This might be his big break but we expect his best is yet to come.
We’re happy to see them succeed in Hollywood, and we can only wish they keep coming. Just keep an eye on them though, because when they’re the hottest stars around, you’ll want to remind the World you loved them from the start.
