The actors from Game of Thrones chose their favorite characters to sit on the Iron Throne. Here's who they picked.
By Rodrigo Ayala
In the last season of Game of Thrones (2011), which will air on April 14, 2019, we'll get to see the battle between the Starks, Lannisters, and the Targaryens against the White Walkers, and find out who'll get to rule the Seven Kingdoms from above the coveted Iron Throne.
And as we wait, Channel News Asia got to ask actors Liam Cunningham (Ser Davos Seaworth), Carice Van Houten (Melissandre of Asshai), and Gwendoline Christie (Brienne of Tarth) who their favorite character is to end up winning the Iron Throne. This is what they said:
Liam Cunningham didn't hesitate to answer that his own character should sit on the Iron Throne, since "I'm a selfish actor, essentially, I'm a selfish human being." Also, his character lacks the cold blood to go around killing innocent people—a good trait in a king, at least. In the 2016 San Diego Comic-Con, Cunningham had a different opinion, however: "The only lead we have about this is that George R.R. Martin said the ending would be 'bittersweet' and that doesn't reveal much. Knowing how twisted minds are on this show… I get the image of a White Walker sitting on the Iron Throne… Night King with a leg over an arm smoking a cigarette."
Gwendoline Christie said that, in her opinion, the ones who should take the Iron Throne were the Direwolves (the emblem of House Stark), a bigger, smarter, and more agile race than ordinary wolves. What would be better? Since with human beings things have not turned out too well given their conflicts and jealousy.
Carice Van Houten thinks Samwell Tarly, the oldest son of Lord Randyll Tarly and Lady Melessa Florent, Maester Aemon's assistant shortly after joining the Night's Watch, should keep the Throne at the end. The actress acknowledges that this outcome is highly unlikely, however.
Which characters are most likely to take the Iron Throne in the end?
Beyond the cast's particular opinions, we can estimate the actual odds. The characters who have the greatest claim and likelihood to own this symbolic chair and hold power over all of Westeros are:
He's one of the strongest candidates. When we discovered his blood is half Stark and half Targaryen, we all knew just how solid his claim for the Throne is. His charm and leadership can make him the right choice as well, as he stands to be the king that Westeros needs in order to live the enduring peace it so deserves by now.
She descends directly from a long line of monarchs and her political position is precise. Her family's Throne was usurped, after all, and she's strongly driven by a thirst for vengeance and justice. It looks like she'll do everything in her power during this last season to protect the honor of her dynasty.
The Night King
He's the mysterious leader of the White Walkers and the main villain of the story at this point. His strength is unparalleled, as is his hatred against humans. As things stand now, it seems unlikely that White Walkers could ever be defeated. But in a show as cruel and with so many plot twists as Game of Thrones, everything is possible.
George R.R. Martin himself has said that if he was an average viewer of the show, he'd like Tyrion to rule Westeros. Unfortunately, this charming character is currently Hand of the Queen under Daenerys, and it seems rather unlikely he'll suddenly gain a greater claim to the Throne than her.
As for you, which is the character you'd like to see sitting on the Iron Throne for the show's end?
