The 'Maleficent 2' trailer looks darker than what we ever thought it would be. Say goodbye to the nice, little fairytale you were used to.
Maleficent 2: Mistress of Evil is the sequel to the live-action film that tells the story of Sleeping Beauty's godmother, a Disney production that has surprised all princess fans around the world. But don't be fooled, because even though it is a Disney film, it is not for those who believe that love conquers all no matter what. This adaptation is darker and more sinister than the first part: Maleficent won't rest until she sees Aurora's life destroyed after Prince Phillip has abandoned her, and the whole kingdom has fallen under Maleficent's darkness.
The trailer gives a us sneak peek of the movie, which follows the confrontation between Maleficent and Queen Ingrith (Prince Phillip's mother, who's excitingly portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer). These two queens fight and struggle to see who's the more powerful of the two. Unfortunately, those who will pay the consequences are the innocent lovers, who are victims of a destiny that is chosen for them by other people.
Maleficent was inspired by The Sleeping Beauty. However, it didn't stick to the original fairytale. Though some didn't love the weird angle that was given to the classic fairytale of Sleeping Beauty in Maleficent, in which Angelina Jolie's character is no longer a witch, but rather a fairy from the woods who ends up becoming Aurora's godmother. People loved the switch in the script and applauded Jolie's portrayal of the monster who dooms the princess to never-ending slumber. Still, this sequel seems to be more complex than the first one. This second part takes place five years after Maleficent has made amends with Aurora, and more elements of the Disney mythology have been added to this one, without compromising the family traditions of the company.
Darkness, abuse of the innocent, powerful curses, and evil are some of the elements we'll find in this new film that breaks with the traditional fairytales we are used to. Maleficent 2 stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Skrein, and Chiwetel Ejiofor and will be released on October 18th.
