Actor Peter Mayhew, who played Chewbacca in the original Star Wars trilogy, has died at 74.
Actor Peter Mayhew, best known for portraying Chewbacca in the original Star Wars trilogy, died this Tuesday at 74. His family made the announcement on the actor's Twitter account, saying that he passed away in his North Texas home, surrounded by their beloved ones.
Mayhew was working in a hospital in London when producer Charles H. Scheer asked him to participate in Simbad and the Eye of The Tiger in 1977. Later on, he became part of cast of the Star Wars saga, starring in The Empire Strikes Back, The Return of The Jedi, Revenge of the Sith, The Force Awakens, and The Star Wars Holiday Special.
His Chewbacca was like no other: his height, 7 feet and 3 inches, helped him portray this funny and furry creature who was best friends with Han Solo. He also attended many Star Wars conventions, as he was one of the favorite characters of George Lucas' iconic franchise.
Mark Hamill also posted a heartful message to his friend, calling him "the gentlest of giants".
There will be a memorial service on June 29 for family and friends and another one for fans in early December in Los Angeles.
May the force be forever with you, Peter.
