Warning: Spoilers ahead.
The final great battle in Game of Thrones is about to begin, and the show’s latest episode is but a taste of the brutality that’s about to hit Westeros. We’re beginning to realize it may not have made sense to defeat the White Walkers, since, in the end, the whole continent might be destroyed by the far less supernatural conflict between Daenerys and Cersei.
As a matter of fact, the two warring queens could end up killing millions—now more so than ever, after Missandei’s last words.
Dany’s most loyal counselor and friend was brutally executed by the end of the last episode at the hands of the Mountain, and by the direct order of Cersei. Before she died, however, Missandei got the chance to say one final word: “Dracarys.”
As we all know, Dracarys is what Dany utters every time she orders her dragons to bring a fiery death upon her opponents. In High Valyrian, Daenerys’ mother tongue, the term means “Dragon Fire.” Missandei utters this very word with anger and frustration, as we see her sending Dany a not-so-subtle message telling her what to do next. “Burn them all” comes to mind at this point.
The show has been keen to point out just how obsessed the Targaryens are with fire and burning. Dany’s father, Aerys II, commonly known as The Mad King, died while saying those very words: “burn them all,” intent on killing innocents in King’s Landing during the civil war that took the Targaryens off the Iron Throne in the first place. The stage is perfectly set for history to repeat itself, it seems.
Missandei’s death and last words might just be the final nail on the coffin for Daenerys. The Mother of Dragons seems increasingly unstable, as she finds taking the Iron Throne back has not been as simple as she probably had hoped. Her latest confrontation with Jon, her long-lost nephew and the man she loved, is but another stressful factor that seems to be driving her to madness. As Jon has now revealed, he has a better claim to the throne than her, and as she realizes that the people in Westeros are more keen on Jon than on anyone else to rule, she might lose it altogether.
If Daenerys decides to take Missandei’s last words to heart, she’ll likely “burn them all,” regardless of anyone else’s advice. She’ll try and burn the city to the ground to achieve her goals, no matter the cost—destroying everything in her path. That would probably be Daenerys’ tragic end.
After all we’ve seen, Missandei’s “dracarys” could only represent the prelude to Dany’s complete and devastating breakdown. What do you think? Is Dany destined to follow in her father’s footsteps and become “The Mad Queen”?
