The Weird Story Of The Coolest Kid Born On-Stage At Woodstock '69

There are many legends about Woodstock that have never been confirmed. But what do you think about the woman who gave birth onstage? Don't you think there would be tons of evidence about it?

The picture you’re seeing has been the source of a huge controversy for years. There's a woman on what appears to be a stage giving birth in front of thousands of people. The photo was allegedly taken at Woodstock right when the woman had a baby in the middle of the festival. However, no one has ever been able to prove this actually happened, and if you search on the internet, you’ll never get any names or more photographic evidence (I mean, this photo alone took me a lot of time and effort). So, what’s the deal with this image? I mean, if this really happened and there’s a photo that proves it, then why is the photo so hard to find in the festival records, and why has no one been able to confirm the birth? As Chumlee says in that famous meme from Pawn Stars, “I don’t know Rick, it looks illegal.” But let’s take a look at the story, so we can draw our own conclusions.

Yes, Woodstock was pretty wild and many strange and bizarre things happened during the three days this chaotic yet amazing festival lasted. If you take into account that there were about half a million attendants, there’s a big probability that at least one of the women gave birth there, especially when you look at the pictures and see so many pregnant women enjoying this historic event. Now, there’s a video on a channel called ClickHole where a bunch of people tell their best story at Woodstock. One woman called Julia Dawes explains how she was born on the third day of the festival right on the main stage. Actually, she says, the photo shows her mother right before she was born. It’s been almost sixty years since Woodstock, yet she’s the only person I’ve seen claiming she was born there. According to various reports, four babies were born during the festival, others say it was only two or one, while some are sure this is just a rumor that got stuck in the minds of the attendants and music history.

This subject has obsessed people and researchers over the years. The problem is that there isn’t any single birth certificate or piece of evidence that confirms what happened. However, this doesn’t really mean anything since we’re talking about a different time and a crazy event filled with hippies who believed in a more natural and less structured life. If a baby was actually born there, it’s most likely that the mother just took them home and registered them later. Yet there are numerous records of all the medical incidents that occurred throughout the three days, such as rat bites, drug overdoses (707 to be precise, not that many for the number of people there), peptic ulcers, and so on, but there’s no mention of any births. So, although there isn’t any written evidence, there’s still plenty of hear-say from attendants and staff.

One of the most famous accounts is actually on film. In the video, singer John Sebastian stops his performance to announce that a lady had just given birth while he was singing. The medical director of the festival actually told reporters that there had been two births, a woman who was taken to the local hospital via helicopter and another one who went into labor in the middle of a massive traffic jam and had given birth in a car. Elliot Tiber wrote in his memoir, Taking Woodstock, that he had actually helped deliver a baby at his parent's hotel, very close to the festival. He never asked for the mother's name nor the baby's. That's how crazy this festival was.

Still, there’s no actual evidence that a woman gave birth on stage at Woodstock, so there’s no way to know whether Julia’s story is true. I mean, she could be one of these babies who were born near the festival. However, we can’t deny that it’s probable that other babies were actually born during that epic festival. So, what about the photo? Was it a photo montage? We might never know. I don’t want to say it's fake, but I’m pretty sure it is. There are too many things on the image, and don’t you think if this had actually happened, the musician would have looked? Also, wouldn't the paramedics have taken her backstage immediately? There are too many things about his that tell me it’s a fake, but still, it’s a pretty cool story that is nothing compared to the many experiences people have shared about this legendary weekend.
