Semen is edible, nutritious, and apparently, pretty good for you.
In the list of random things that have unexpected health benefits, semen is very close to the top. However, if you really think about it, it does make sense that it would be full of things that are good for your body. One of semen’s main jobs is to get sperm into the vagina, and the only way it can do that is if it convinces the woman’s body that it’s not harmful. The way it “convinces” the body is by containing many nutrients and hormones that make it appear almost like a vitamin. So, if you want to know exactly what are the benefits that semen can have on your body, stick around.
Semen contains lots of nutrients.
Semen is in fact full of nutritional properties, but how much do you need to consume in order to actually get any results? Probably a lot, but you can also find these same nutrients from a regular, healthy diet. Nevertheless, semen does contain calcium, chloride, fructose, glucose, zinc, proteins, among others. You can even think of it as a vitamin pill.
Also, healthy hormones.
Among its properties, semen contains a number of hormones that the body often lacks. These are oxytocin, progesterone, melatonin, cortisol, testosterone, estrone, estrogen, and a few others. Of course, it’s a matter of how much you consume, but overall, semen contains all those and more.
It can help prevent cancer.
A study from the University of Northern California with hundreds of subjects says that those who consume semen at least twice a week can reduce their chances of cancer by a 40%. This is attributed to its many nutrients, like vitamin C, an antioxidant; B12, which regulates metabolism and the nervous system; magnesium, which modulates neurons; among many others. As was mentioned above, doing it one time won't prevent the illness, but it's proven to have healthy benefits that could have a significant impact in the long term.
In order to prove semen actually had benefits for women, female students at the State University of New York in Albany compared a group of 293 women who were having sex with and without a condom. The results showed that the women who weren’t using a condom had less signs of depression. The study also mentioned that the vagina has the ability to absorb semen’s properties quickly and it’s detected in the bloodstream within a few hours.
In order for sperm to be able to make it through the female reproductive system unharmed and reach the egg, it must surround itself with natural anti-inflammatories and immunosuppressants, so that it’s not attacked when it enters the vagina. This can help with any swelling, but as was mentioned before, it depends on the amount needed to reduce an inflammation.
If you do a quick search on the internet, you'll discover many other health benefits that semen is supposed to have on your body. However, some haven’t been researched properly or lack evidence to support their results. What we do know is that you probably won't see immediate results from ingesting semen, especially if you swallow it. Yet, it’s been scientifically proven that sperm contains many nutrients that are beneficial for the body in the long run, just not enough to actually do any major changes right away. Either way, if these possibilities don't convince you, you can always find the same nutrients elsewhere (like food, for instance).
