The 94th Academy Awards will take place on March 27th at The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California. It promises to be a glamorous night at the film industry’s most popular awards.
But while we get to see our favorites on the red carpet, and maybe even get a well-deserved award, the nominees get to go home with a goodie bag.
What is the Oscar’s goodie bag?
The Oscar’s goodie bag (also known as gift bag) is a yearly tradition where the nominees for acting and directing get a bag of goodies to take home.
It began in 1989 with the Academy itself handing out bags. In 2006 the American Inland Revenue Service (an agency of the US government responsible for investigating financial-related crimes) stepped in, claiming that it was a form of non-cash compensation. Since then, third parties took over the gifts.
Currently, the bags are organized by the marketing company Distinctive Assets, a Los Angeles-based marketing company.
Called the “Everyone Wins” Nominee Gift Bag, it’s not actually affiliated with The Oscars, and Distinctive Assets independently curate the contents of it.
What is in the 2022 Oscars gift bag?
The gift bag is composed of 53 items, experiences, and getaways, that has been valued by Forbes at $140,000. It will be delivered to the actors and directors to their homes and has the theme of wellness, eco-friendliness, and diversity.
The cost of the gifts is fully absorbed by the participant brands, which pay a minimum of $4,000 to have a product or service in the gift bag offerings and up to $25,000 to be a sponsor. Recipients also pay income tax for the monetary value of all accepted gifts.
