John Legend, the acclaimed musician and activist, has been vocal about his and his wife Chrissy Teigen’s pro-choice stance. In a recent interview, Legend emphasized the importance of keeping government out of personal medical decisions, particularly those involving pregnancy and reproductive health.

Legend and Teigen’s advocacy for reproductive rights is deeply personal.
The couple experienced a heartbreaking miscarriage in 2020, losing their son Jack at 20 weeks. Chrissy needed the abortion care in that time due to the miscarriage complications to “make sure she didn’t die”.

“We were losing our pregnancy, a pregnancy we wanted, a baby we wanted, we were losing him and we had to have abortion care to resolve that, to make sure that Chrissy didn’t die,” he said.
This traumatic experience has fueled their commitment to ensuring that women have the autonomy to make decisions about their own bodies without government interference.
“Could you imagine us going through the tragedy of losing a pregnancy, the physical duress that Chrissy was going through to resolve that and having to deal with, at the same time, legal red tape, out of concern that the doctors might get arrested, or that she might get arrested for doing what they needed to do to preserve her life?“
In his statements, John Legend has described the involvement of law enforcement in such personal matters as “offensive” and “nasty.” He argues that decisions around pregnancy should be made by the mother, her doctor, and her family, not by politicians.
“To have the government involved in that conversation in any way is so offensive to me,” John Legend said. “It’s nasty. It’s evil. It should not be even a discussion. The government should not be involved”.
Legend’s comments come at a time when reproductive rights are under significant threat in the United States. Following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, several states have moved to impose strict abortion laws, sparking widespread debate and concern. Legend and Teigen’s voices add to the chorus of those advocating for the protection of women’s rights and reproductive freedom.
