Canceled Series That Absolutely Deserve a Comeback

The world of television is both amazing and ruthless. While incredible series grace our streaming platforms, there’s just so much content out there that some gems get overlooked—and worse, canceled. But many of these shows deserve a second chance.

Series That Were Canceled but Deserve a Second Chance

This short list highlights great stories that captured our hearts but vanished too soon.

Firefly

Created by Joss Whedon, known for The Avengers (2012) and Justice League (2017), Firefly is a space-western following a crew of outlaws on their adventures across the galaxy. Although it struggled during its original run, it has since become a cult favorite. Fans were lucky to get some closure with the follow-up film Serenity, but the series itself still leaves us longing for more.

Anne with an E

This period drama tugged at our heartstrings with its beautiful storytelling. Set in the 1890s, it follows Anne, a young girl mistakenly sent to live with siblings on a remote island. The show’s cancellation resulted from disputes between Netflix and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), meaning we probably won’t see a revival anytime soon.

The Acolyte

The Acolyte polarized Star Wars fans, offering a compelling concept but falling short in execution. Set hundreds of years before the Skywalker saga, the series follows a Jedi and his Padawan as they investigate a mysterious murder that foreshadows the rise of the Sith.

Mindhunter

Set in the 1970s, Mindhunter follows two detectives as they delve into the minds of the era’s most notorious serial killers, aiming to prevent future crimes. Unfortunately, the show was put on indefinite hiatus after its second season because director David Fincher wanted to focus on other projects. The series’ high production costs and demanding schedule also contributed to its uncertain future.

Hannibal

Despite a loyal fan base and rave reviews, Hannibal, which explores the relationship between FBI investigator Will Graham and the infamous Hannibal Lecter, was axed after its third season due to declining viewership.

The IT Crowd

This British comedy gave us a hilarious look at office life from the perspective of IT employees. Thankfully, the series ended on its own terms, with creator Graham Linehan choosing to wrap it up before it could become repetitive.

GLOW

This one hit us all hard: Set in the 1980s, GLOW follows a struggling actress who finds new purpose as she joins a group of misfits to form a women’s wrestling team. Netflix canceled the series after three seasons due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which complicated the production of a planned fourth season.
