Now everybody wants to talk about Bruno and there’s a good reason for that! The song from Disney’s animated film, Encanto, unexpectedly became the most reproduced song on all social media platforms and broke all records topping the Billboard Hot 100 for five weeks and by now staying at the number 1 hit on the Billboard 200 for nine consecutive weeks.
The success of the song was so unexpected that it wasn’t even submitted for consideration to the Oscars and thus, the more emotional ballad “Dos Orugitas” got nominated. But, seeing the success of the song, the Academy couldn’t just let it out, and since it seems they’re changing their televised game in so many ways (eight categories won’t be presented on the live ceremony), they’re making a historical change by having a live performance of a song that isn’t nominated, and that is our beloved “We Don’t Talk About Bruno.”

In an attempt to make the show more appealing for the audiences who had previously complained about it being too long and kind of boring, the Oscars are making some major changes, starting with having hosts once again after years without one. This year three of the most hilarious comedians of the industry, Amy Schumer, Regina Hall, and Wanda Skyes, will take the leading role. Not only that, it’s expected that the Encanto hit will open the ceremony with its very first live performance ever!
The Academy has also announced that there will be two important homages, one for James Bond and another celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Godfather. After these announcements, it’s clear that the decision of presenting eight categories before the ceremony was to make some time in the show for these performances. Though it’s still questionable, many fans will definitely love these moments.
Now the question that remains is: will all the five contenders for Best Original Song perform during the show as they traditionally do? That is, will Beyonce make a comeback to the Oscars, will Billy Eilish perform her James Bond song, and more importantly, will we have two Encanto performances? The answer is still unknown since the Academy hasn’t yet announced their participation, though it’s actually expected.
“Dos Oruguitas” is the only song in Spanish nominated this year, and if it magically manages to win (though chances are it won’t) it would give Lin-Manuel Miranda an EGOT status that only a few have achieved. Despite the controversy of not submitting the Bruno song, Lin-Manuel expressed he is still proud of the company’s decision, being the foundational song for the story. Still, it seems it will be a very special night for the Puerto Rican creative.
