The subway theft occurred at a time when the city had increased police presence on the transit system to address rising crime rates. Despite the heightened security, the girl and an accomplice, still at large, managed to seize an empty, out-of-service train from the Briarwood Subway station in Queens shortly after midnight on September 12.
“There’s no question it was an extremely foolish and reckless act by two individuals accessing live track in order to get access to our train,” Demetrius Crichlow, interim president of New York City Transit, said at a news conference Wednesday morning.

Authorities are continuing to search for the second suspect, described as a slim-built man with a light complexion. He was last seen wearing a blue tank top, red shorts, and carrying a black backpack.
The incident has raised concerns about subway security, as police work to track down the remaining suspect while ensuring the safety of NY’s public transit system.
