Ethiopia made a statement to the world regarding the environment. About 350 million trees were planted in a single day – twelve hours to be exact – according to a government minister, which implies a massive attempt to combat deforestation, climate change, and its worst effects. This is a historic move for the African nation, who announced this week that they would outdo every other tree-planting initiative in the world.

@szEthiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed had planned something he called the “Green Legacy Goal,” an initiative with one objective: to plant 200 million trees in a day at over 1,000 sites. The last country to attempt a feat like this was India, who held the record for most trees planted in a single day since 2016, when they planted 49.3 million trees in one day with the help of around 800,000 volunteers. Now, Ethiopia has surpassed its own goal. In 2018, China announced it sought to break this record with a plan that would involve planting a forest the size of Ireland, while the UK spent 5.7 million GBP to develop a new forest.

Ethiopia’s project aims to address the issue that has become apparent recently, and the issue that has rallied people to provide solutions: the climate crisis. Ethiopia, particularly, is a country with a severe drought problem and a country that, according to the UN, had only a 4 percent forest coverage in the 2000s. This meant a 35 percent reduction of forests with regard to a century earlier. Every citizen in this country has been encouraged to plant at least 40 seedlings this summer, for which the country expects to plant 4 billion trees. Here’s to hoping.
