The first-ever Olympic breaking competition, also known as breakdancing, is making its debut at the 2024 Paris Olympics. This event features the world’s top B-boys and B-girls showcasing their skills in a series of battles.
The competition kicked off with B-girl India from the Netherlands winning the first battle against B-girl Talash from the refugee team.

How is Breaking Scored?
This competition consists of battles between two athletes. In each round one athlete performs first and the other one responds.
Rounds are scored on 5 criteria: technique, originality, execution, vocabulary (refers to the variety of movements, styles and transitions) and lastly musicality (focuses on how well the athlete combines music with the movements).
Each of these criteria is worth 20% of the final score.
To add a touch of mystery, the breakers don’t know what song they will be dancing to, although they are provided with the complete playlist of possible songs.
The Breaking event is taking place at Place de la Concorde, one of the most iconic places in Paris, where the skateboarding and BMX events also took place.
As much as we are loving this new sport, Los Angeles has already decided that Breaking will not be part of the sports program in 2028. This news is sad, however, we hope they change their minds.
