In February 2025, a 32-year-old man revealed he had been held captive for nearly 20 years by his stepmother, Connecticut woman Kimberly Sullivan. His desperate escape came after he set fire to their home using printer paper, hand sanitizer, and a lighter. When police arrived, they found him severely malnourished—just 69 pounds despite standing 5’9”.
The abuse reportedly started when he was just 11. He was locked in an 8-by-9-foot room for most of the day, without heating, air conditioning, or access to basic hygiene. Sullivan allegedly gave him only two sandwiches and two small bottles of water each day. He was denied dental and medical care and hadn’t attended school since fourth grade.
