My name is Marcus J. Ball. I am a private prosecutor, and I have a problem with lying politicians.” This is how Ball starts an amateurishly-made video in which he explains his motives and goals regarding raising money to prosecute Boris Johnson for lying to the British public during the EU referendum in 2016. Ball has apparently taking this very seriously which is why he has launched a private prosecution of Johnson who is currently one of the strongest candidates to be elected Prime Minister following Theresa May’s resignation.

Johnson, former Secretary of Foreign Affairs for which he became notorious world-wide, is charged with lying publicly after he repeatedly and falsely claimed during the 2016 EU referendum campaign that the UK handed 350 million pounds per week to the European Union. This may mean Johnson deliberately misled the British public, and is therefore being accuse of misconduct.

Ball has managed to raise more than 200,000 GBP through a crowdfunding campaign with which he was able to convince a district judge to proceed with the case. This was a remarkable victory, and a landmark ruling by a district judge, and certainly one that could harm Johnson politically. Ball collected hours of footage to prove Johnson had lied and proved he sometimes gave different figures. Sometimes it was 8 billion GBP a year, sometimes it was 20 billion pounds a year. But, does this mean this is all part of an elaborate plan to undermine the Tories? Maybe, but it’s more complicated than just that.

The process will be somewhat slow. Johnson will only actually present himself before the court in a six months time. There will be hearing in three of fours weeks time for which he will have to attend, but these will be administrative only.

The next stage will be settled at the crown court, where Johnson’s legal team expect to see the case dismissed. If, however, things go all the way into a full trial that’s when the case would be presented in front of a jury. But by then, Johnson could be prime minister. So how is this to play out?
