The controversy arose from a call made by Trump to Ukraine’s president in July to discuss Joe Biden—a move seen by many as Trump trying to leverage political advantage against his opponents. Now, even those Democrats who were previously on the fence about impeachment, like Pelosi, are joining the call, which set in motion the announcement and subsequent procedures.
Trump was unsurprisingly angry when he heard the news, calling Pelosi’s move a “total Witch Hunt!” He also said he would release a transcript of his conversation with the Ukranian President in order to quell any concerns surrounding the whistleblower complaint.
And, of course, the president couldn’t resist tweeting about it. “You will see it was a very friendly and totally appropriate call,” he wrote. “No pressure and, unlike Joe Biden and his son, NO quid pro quo!”
The impeachment proceedings are set to begin barely a year before the presidential election, so we’ll have to see just how this matter will affect its outcome. The die, as they say, is cast.
