Local media have reported that several people have been injured and infrastructure across various cities has been damaged, in the localities of Saint-Louis du Sud, Les Cayes, and Jérémie. The quake was recorded at 08.29 am local time (12.29 UTC) and at a depth of 10 kilometers.
Many people ran out of their homes in panic as the quake shook the streets of Port-au-Prince, as witnessed by Efe.
The United States initially issued a tsunami warning in Port-au-Prince and other coastal towns of Haiti as a result of the quake but withdrew the warning after considering that the danger had passed.
Haiti was hit in 2010 by a magnitude 7 earthquake that left 300,000 people dead, just as many injured, and 1.5 million people affected.
