Since 2019, the Swedish Wikileaks founder, Julian Assange has been imprisoned at Belmarsh high-security prison in London. While the US government is still trying to extradite him, Assange and fiance Stella Moris have finally been granted permission to marry.
Assange and Moris are the parents of two children, who were conceived while the Australian journalist was in the Ecuadorian embassy in the British capital, where he had taken refuge in 2012 to avoid being handed over to Sweden for alleged sex crimes that he always denied and charges that have already been dropped.
The WikiLeaks founder has remained in Belmarsh prison, southeast of London, since 2019, when Ecuador withdrew his political asylum, and British police arrested him.
“I am relieved that reason has prevailed, and I hope there will be no further interference in our marriage,” Moris said of his request to get permission to marry.
According to media reports, the prison service received the request, and it was considered under the 1983 Marriage Act, which allows prisoners to marry, although the date of the journalist’s wedding has not been disclosed.
Assange, 50, and Moris, 37, are the parents of Gabriel, 4, and Max, 2, both British citizens.
Moris, a lawyer of South African origin, revealed last year that since 2015 she had been in a relationship with the journalist, whom she met in 2011 when she joined Assange’s legal team, and that she visited him almost daily at the Ecuadorian embassy.
Assange continues his legal battle to avoid being extradited to the United States, a country that requests his surrender for conspiring to obtain confidential defense information after the portal published thousands of leaked documents on the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. EFE
