“Maná has a surprise for you!,” their Instagram post read, when Mexican superstar rock band Maná announced on Monday it would launch scholarships for Latinx students in the Unites States to help continue their education. According to the official press statement, “these scholarships are intended to help applicants who have a demonstrated commitment to positive change in their communities; specifically, those who have chosen to help clean up or otherwise improve the environment around them.”
The members of Maná have been environmental activists for a long time and have a history of supporting causes with their Selva Negra Foundation. Recently, Maná frontman Fher supported Alejandro Sanz’s initiative to donate money for Dreamers in order to get legal aid and funding for government programs.

The program is supported by their foundation Selva Negra, along with Univision Foundation, administered by Scholarship America, and it’s aimed at helping Latinx students (be it US citizens, legal residents of the US, or undocumented residents of the US, including DACA recipients). Those eligible must be between the ages of 18-35, high school seniors or graduates, or current college undergraduate, or who plan to enroll in full-time undergraduate study. Hurry, though! Only the first 1,000 applications submitted will be considered. Deadline to apply is at 3 p.m. CT on October 23.
