Zakrzewski accepted a medal and trophy for finishing third in the 80-kilometer Manchester to Liverpool race held last April 7, 2023. Tracking information on her chip later showed that she traveled by car for approximately 4 kilometers before continuing the race.
The marathon runner said she informed organizers that she used a car and finished the race in a “non-competitive” manner, but, did nothing to fix the situation. “She had collected the trophy at the end of the race, something she should not have done if she had completed the race in a non-competitive manner. She also did not attempt to return the trophy in the week following the race,” said an independent disciplinary panel.
Even, according to organizers, if the marathon runner suffered from mental confusion on race day, she had a week after the race to realize her actions and return the trophy, which she did not do. “Finally, she posted about the race on social media and this did not reveal that she had completed the race in a non-competitive manner.”
Who Is Joasia Zakrzewski?
Joasia Zakrzewski is a 47-year-old doctor originally from Scotland, who currently lives in Australia. In February, at the Taiwan Ultramarathon, she won the 48-hour race, setting a world distance record at the time with a 411-kilometer run. Spectacular stuff.
