As Covid-19 cases increase with the propagation of the Delta variant, vaccination rates have lowered in the US, prompting the government to take more radical actions to control the pandemic in the country. Although an big percentage of the population has voluntarily gotten the vaccine, there are still many who are reluctant to do so, causing more propagation of the virus.
Many cities in the US like Los Angeles County, San Francisco, and Washington have returned to a mandatory indoor mask-wearing; however, NYC’s Mayor Bill de Blasio has been reluctant to take that measurement. Instead, he’s following the steps of many European countries who are now requiring vaccination proof for several indoor and leisure activities.
In France, Italy, the UK, among other countries, proof of vaccination will be implemented for indoor and entertainment activities. In France, for instance, people will be required to show proof of vaccination or a negative test to be allowed inside bars, restaurants, gyms, and music venues. However, according to De Blasio, in New York City, there won’t be a testing option.

“We’ve got to shake people at this point and say, ‘Come on now.’ We tried voluntary. We could not have been more kind and compassionate. Free testing, everywhere you turn, incentives, friendly, warm embrace. The voluntary phase is over, it’s time for mandates because it’s the only way to protect our people.”
De Blasio admitted he knows many will disagree with this new mandate, but increasing the vaccination numbers is the only way to deal with the rising Delta variant cases in the city. This new measurement will start officially on September 13, but it will have six weeks of preparation in which the city will provide education for businesses about the requirement. The date will also coincide with the reopening of schools and with more workers returning officially to offices.
“If you want to participate in our society fully, you’ve got to get vaccinated. It’s time.”
The procedure for this mandate will count on a special health pass, called the ‘Key to NYC pass.’ This will come both in the new city’s digital app, Excelsior, or a paper card validating the vaccination status of the person. Now, this will only be mandatory for indoor activities, so people reluctant to get vaccinated will still be able to dine at outdoor restaurants.
New Yorkers will have more information about the last details of the mandate in a couple of weeks.
