Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), now famous for laying some truths via her Twitter account, took aim at the so-called “Straight Pride Parade” after it gathered around 200 people, but failed to balance its turnout in terms of gender. AOC posted the irony of being “proud” and straight yet being unable to make their parade attractive enough for both genders. The freshman lawmaker was either merely reacting to a video of the march in which few women appear.
“For men who are allegedly so ‘proud’ of being straight,” she said, “they seem to show real incompetence at attracting women to their event. Seems more like a ‘I-Struggle-With-Masculinity’ parade to me. Hope they grow enough over the next year to support / join LGBTQ fam next #Pride.”
This march was reportedly organized by three men, reacting against the series of parades across the country and the world that celebrate LGBT Pride in June, otherwise known as Pride month. In the video AOC posted, you can see American flags and signs that read “Make normalcy normal again”, “Drain the swamp,” “Secure America’s borders” and “Trump 2020,” that is, slogans and beliefs closely associated with conservatism and patriarchy, even going as far that straight people are an “oppressed majority”.
@iconografiexxiStraight Pride Parade has been as pathetic as ill-conceived. Ever since it was announced, it was mocked by people who suggested that the dress code would indicate “socks with sandals” and “dad jeans”. If people who attended this march are so adamant about showing their “pride”, regardless of misunderstanding that LGBT communities use Pride month to raise awareness about discrimination, groundbreaking ideas surrounding sexual orientation and gender, and the overall argument in favor of living peacefully in a society, they should as hell need to asks themselves why straights didn’t flock to their march, and why the marchers were left looking like pathetic white men in a parade that can’t seem to attract women.
