In his first Sunday blessing, Pope Leo XIV issued a passionate call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, a lasting peace in Ukraine, and renewed efforts toward global reconciliation, appealing directly to world leaders with the words:

“Never again war.”

Speaking from the central loggia of St. Peter’s Basilica—a symbolic return to tradition—the 69-year-old American pontiff addressed a crowd of more than 100,000 pilgrims and visitors, marking a significant moment both in Catholic ritual and geopolitical commentary.

“I carry in my heart the suffering of the beloved Ukrainian people,” Leo said. “May whatever is possible be done to reach an authentic, true and lasting peace.”

Pope Leo XIV Blends Tradition with His Own Twist

Unlike his immediate predecessor, Pope Francis, who often delivered his Sunday messages from the side window of the Apostolic Palace, Leo chose to step directly into the heart of the square—a symbolic gesture many interpreted as a sign of unity and visibility.

While some conservative Catholics have expressed cautious optimism about Leo’s early gestures—such as his use of traditional papal garments on Thursday—he returned on Sunday to the simpler white cassock and silver cross, signaling a blend of continuity and renewal.

“He’s trying to speak to everyone—without alienating one side or the other,” said Aldo Maria Valli, a conservative Catholic journalist. “Don’t shoot Leo,” he wrote in a blog post, urging patience.

Peace at the Forefront

Leo’s address struck a firm diplomatic tone amid ongoing violence in the Middle East and Eastern Europe. In addition to Ukraine and Gaza, the pope also referenced the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan, expressing hope that continued dialogue would lead to a lasting resolution.

“May a ceasefire immediately come into effect,” Leo said of Gaza. “May humanitarian aid be allowed into the civilian population and may all hostages be freed.”

The speech echoed the language of Pope Francis, whom Leo quoted in describing the current state of global conflict as a “third world war in pieces.”

Leo notably refrained from directly condemning Russia, a step he had previously taken in a 2022 TV interview as Bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, when he called Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine an imperialist act of aggression.

Prayers, Pilgrims, and Papal Duties

Before his public address, Pope Leo celebrated a private Mass in the grottoes beneath St. Peter’s Basilica, praying before the tombs of several previous popes—including Paul VI, Benedict XVI, and Francis. He was joined by his brother, John, and the head of his Augustinian order.

Later in the day, Leo participated in the official unsealing of the papal apartments, closed since Pope Francis’s death on April 21. It remains unclear whether Leo will move into the apartments or continue residing in his modest Vatican palazzo.

Pilgrims from around the world—including a 50-member group from Houston, Texas, waving American flags—were in attendance at the square, where marching bands and bells gave the occasion a festive air.

A Pope for Our Times

Pope Leo XIV was elected on May 8, following a two-day conclave after the death of Francis. In early remarks to cardinals, he described himself as an “unworthy choice” and vowed to continue Francis’s legacy, particularly on issues of social justice and missionary outreach.

In Sunday’s homily, he also emphasized the need for increased religious vocations, calling on priests to live joyfully and serve as examples to younger generations.

“We must live the joy of the Gospel—not discourage others, but invite them to hear the voice of the Lord.”

Leo explained he chose the name Leo in honor of Pope Leo XIII, remembered for his commitment to social teaching and human dignity, and signaled an interest in the ethical implications of artificial intelligence and technology in modern society.

Looking Ahead

Pope Leo XIV will be formally inaugurated during a Mass in St. Peter’s Square next Sunday, May 18. In the meantime, he begins a week of private audiences and official Vatican business, with the world watching closely for signs of the direction his papacy will take.
