The two NASA stranded astronauts, Sunita “Suni” Williams and Barry “Butch” Wilmore, are finally heading back to Earth after an unexpected nine-month stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Originally, their mission was supposed to last just eight days, but technical issues with their spacecraft, Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner, forced them to remain in orbit much longer than planned. The spacecraft was deemed unsafe for the journey back, leaving the astronauts with no choice but to extend their stay while NASA worked on a solution.

After months of waiting, Williams and Wilmore are making their way back aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule, which undocked from the ISS earlier today. Their journey is expected to end with a splashdown off the coast of Florida later this evening.

They are not alone—joining them on the return trip are astronauts Nick Hague and Aleksandr Gorbunov, who have been on the ISS since September 2024. Their return marks a significant moment in space travel, as NASA continues to refine and improve its commercial crew transportation options.

NASA has scheduled a press conference with the astronauts at 7:30 p.m. ET today, shortly after their expected splashdown at 6:00 p.m. ET. The event will be streamed live on NASA’s platforms, including NASA+ and their YouTube channel.

How Did The Stranded Astronauts Survive Nine Months in Space?

Spending an extended period in space requires adaptability and careful planning. Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore managed their prolonged stay thanks to the advanced life support systems aboard the ISS, which provided breathable air, water recycling, and climate control. Food supplies were replenished regularly through cargo missions, ensuring they had a steady diet of shelf-stable meals and occasional fresh produce.

Physical health was also a priority. The astronauts followed a rigorous exercise routine to counteract the effects of microgravity, using specially designed equipment to maintain muscle mass and bone density. Mental well-being was equally important—they stayed connected with loved ones through video calls, pursued personal hobbies, and supported each other to stay positive in isolation. In case of emergencies, the ISS has medical supplies and remote support from Earth-based doctors, ensuring their safety throughout their mission.

After an unexpected and challenging extension, Sunita Williams and Barry Wilmore are finally coming home. Their resilience and dedication to their mission have captivated audiences worldwide, highlighting both the risks and rewards of human space exploration.
