“Anything for Views”: Influencer Seriously Injured Doing TikTok Stiletto Challenge

Nicki Minaj Challenge - “Anything for Views”: Influencer Seriously Injured Doing TikTok Stiletto Challenge

A 32-year-old Russian influencer and new mother, Mariana Vasiuc (also known as Barutkina), suffered a serious spinal injury while attempting the viral Nicki Minaj “stiletto challenge—a dangerous trend that involves striking a balancing pose in high heels atop unstable objects.

In her attempt, just weeks after giving birth, Vasiuc balanced on a baby formula container placed atop an upturned saucepan on her kitchen counter. Wearing stilettos and initially steady with assistance, she lost balance once support was removed, causing a fall that resulted in a compression flexion fracture of her T9 vertebra.

Escalating Danger: Why These Trends Often End Badly

What began as a playful, iconic pose from Nicki Minaj’s 2013 video “High School” has escalated into a trend involving increasingly precarious setups—think soup cans, wine bottles, dumbbells, and even traffic cones, all while balancing in high heels. Some participants have even upped the ante by performing stunts while holding a newborn or blindfolded, drawing sharp criticism for recklessness.

Medical professionals and public safety experts warn of the unpredictability and injury risk inherent in such stunts. A Toronto surgeon specifically cautioned that balancing in high heels on unstable surfaces can easily lead to falls and severe injuries.

Major Risks Associated with the Nicki Minaj “Stiletto Challenge”

Attempting the viral Stiletto Challenge comes with a variety of physical risks—many of them serious. One of the biggest dangers is falling from elevated or slippery surfaces, especially while wearing high heels, which significantly compromise stability. Many of the props used in these videos—such as cans, baby formula containers, or saucepans—are inherently unstable and prone to tipping or sliding.

Participants also face postural overload, as holding a squatting or balanced pose in stilettos puts unnatural strain on the body’s core and lower limbs, increasing the risk of losing balance. Additionally, personal conditions are often overlooked—Mariana Vasiuc, for example, was still in the postpartum phase, with her body in recovery and more vulnerable to injury.

If a fall occurs, the consequences can be severe: spinal fractures, neck or head trauma, and even broken limbs are possible—particularly if the participant falls from a height or onto a hard surface.

A Broader Pattern: Viral Challenges & Real-World Consequences

The stiletto challenge doesn’t exist in a vacuum. It’s part of a larger ecosystem of dangerous viral trends, such as the Milk Crate Challenge—where participants stack and climb unstable crates, resulting in frequent injuries like broken bones or spinal issues—and the Blackout Challenge, a choking game linked to multiple fatalities among youths.

These phenomena often exploit teenagers’ impulse and desire for peer validation, while social media’s algorithm-driven rewards amplify the urge to participate. Healthcare experts urge digital literacy and parental engagement as preventive steps, while platforms intermittently enforce bans on trending but dangerous content.

Amid escalating attempts and injuries, Nicki Minaj herself addressed the trend, encouraging fans to prioritize safety: “Both feet on the ground tho. Ten toes.” Still, many creators continue to push boundaries for views and engagement.
