Every year, we set ourselves hard goals that by the end of the year only bring us stress and anxiety for not fulfilling them. From weight loss to finding love, we put ourselves under a lot of pressure to become bad copies of what society thinks we all should be. In that quest for unnecessary and vain stuff, we tend to forget the things that really matter and that we really need or want. Before blaming yourself and feeling bad for not achieving those resolutions, you should take a look at the great things that happened to you this year and that you may have overlooked.
You have someone who loves you more than anything
We all want to find our significant other, our other half that “completes us”, so to speak. But let’s be honest, that’s just nonsense. We are indeed “complete”. While love and a partner can be an amazing adventure in our lives, it shouldn’t be at the top of our goals, nor followed just because society tell us so. The strongest love we should aim for is our own. Despite the fact that we may neglect self-loving in our quest for that significant other, the truth is that no love will ever be greater than the one we feel for ourselves.

You’ve gathered more wealth than you presume
Among the list of things we always wish every year, we have money and wealth. That’s because we’re told that the more we have, the more valuable we’ll be to others. I won’t say money isn’t important, I like it; it’s a tool that allows us to find some comfort and stability. But then again, in our pursuit of the greatest wealth, we take for granted all the things we’ve gathered through time and to acknowledge how privileged we are. Right now, you have the means to be reading this on the internet, which is something not everybody can do. You have a roof above your head, food on your table, and things that aren’t necessarily essential. Just look around you and value the things you have, but most importantly, that you’ve earned them and that are the direct reflect of your hard work and perseverance.
You’ve accomplished things you didn’t think you were capable of
Every year, we set a determined number of goals that we want to focus on. But let’s face it, we rarely do something about them but complain and blame us when the year’s over and we didn’t make them. However, there are so many things we’ve accomplished throughout the year and yet we choose not to celebrate them. Think about those good grades this term, or that a co-worker or your boss patted you for commitment, or for that new friend you made. Every day there’s a small triumph in your life you should celebrate.

You had great times
We’re a very strange species that focuses on the small complications in life, instead of seeing the big picture. Maybe you didn’t get any richer, or didn’t find Mr. or Mrs. Right, or those extra pounds might still be there, or maybe this year you didn’t travel as much as you planned in your resolutions, but I bet you had great moments to cherish and that made you the person you are tonight. Those parties with friends and colleagues, those moments with your family, that me-time that made you feel at ease with yourself were the things that made this year count. Those are the happy moments you’ll remember when you’re old and those will be the memories you’ll cherish the most as time passes us by.
You survived
Finally, and most importantly, you made it to another year. Use the strength this year gave you to set new and more ambitious goals. Let every day be a lesson that shows you how to grow and become the person you want to be. Don’t listen to what society tells you to be; they’re pointless anyways. Forget those vain resolutions we make every single year; they’re mere brainstorming. Think on what you really want and take baby steps to get there. At the end, every day is another chance to try again, and again, until your dreams come true.
