2020 could be your year of travel, but if you’re still undecided on where to go, and your budget is an issue, here’s a list of places that are both affordable and amazing. Life is too short not to travel, so just do it already. Here are the 10 best affordable destinations for 2020.
Mexico
First things first. No destination list would be complete without Mexico. You may have heard or even visited Cancún or Playa del Carmen, but this country is huge! There’s so much to see, and despite what sensationalist media might tell you, it’s actually quite safe and, best of all, cheap.

There is also a plethora of tourist options: from exciting art and history museums in Mexico City, to the mountains of Oaxaca and even a surrealist garden by artist Edward James in the middle of the jungle. That’s Tilda Swinton in the photo. Yes, THE Tilda Swinton.
Argentina
Argentina’s neverending economic penury is bad news for our friends down south, but at least, it provides a good opportunity to go visit. Make sure you check the exchange rate every day, as it changes constantly. Argentina is also a gigantic country, so there’s many options, from its beautiful capital city, Buenos Aires, to snowy views in Bariloche. Now’s the time to head there.

Turkey
Another country facing economic instability. The Turkish lira has been heavily devalued in the past months. Again, not that this makes us any happy, but hey, all the more reason to go visit. What’s not to like about Turkey? Consider Istanbul, a beautiful and vibrant city. Located at a strategic, geographical crossroads, it enjoys the best of many worlds: west and east, modern and traditional, culture and nightlife, and now, amazing and cheap.

Bolivia
Also known as the Tibet of the Americas. Its capital city, La Paz, stands as high as 13,000 feet. It’s a great place to really get to the heart of South America, since 60% of the population is of indigenous descent. Home to the world’s first meat and potatoes, llamas, among many other things, you’ll enjoy for a very fair price.
@maxwellmodern
Colombia
It’s official: Colombia is hot, and long gone are the Narcos days. A new era of fun and safety has finally returned to Colombia, and you can see it for yourself when you visit this beautiful South American Caribbean country. Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, you name it. Get the party started and head to this incredibly warm destination.

Georgia
Not the Georgia you’re thinking about, but a farther, lesser known, and more mystical one. This Black Sea country is rapidly changing, from Soviet republic to NATO ally. Be sure to head to its capital city, Tbilisi, a hub that contains nearly a third of all of Georgia’s population. It is an interesting mix of old classical and ultra-modern buildings. Georgian food is also the best food in the region, trust me on this.
@dianamiaus
Hungary
Budapest is called the jewel of the Danube, and rightly so. This city has it all, from amazing restaurants and important museums, to impressive architecture and breathtaking views. Also, be sure to head to its bath resorts, some of which boast beautiful interior design from the early 1900s.
@santopatronus
Guatemala
Guatemala is often overlooked. It lacks the good rep boasted by other Central American countries like Costa Rica or Panama, but it’s much cheaper and quite safe as well. Head over to the Maya ruins in Tikal, or check out Antigua, its former capital city. It also has a certain magical element to it.
@thiserrantslifeDid you know it has two volcanoes near its main city? One is called Volcán de Fuego (Fire Volcano) and the other is Volcán de Agua (Water Volcano). Why? Don’t ask me, ask Guatemalans yourself!
Portugal
Lisbon is no Paris. It’s better. Warm, sunny, beautiful Lisbon. There are far fewer tourist traps, so it’s not as crowded as other European destinations. It’s also not as expensive.
@livraria.lelloSo, if you’re thinking about heading there, it’s a great place to start. Food is cheap and delicious, with over one thousand ways of cooking codfish. Porto, up north, is just as beautiful, and they are even more serious about their cuisine and wine. It also has one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world.
Cambodia
@passportinonehandThis is probably the hottest backpacker destination right now, so you’ll be sure to get your money’s worth and more. Local street food will cost you about buck per meal. And then there’s the fact that the country itself is beautiful. So not bad. Not bad at all.
The world is your oyster, and with this, it just so happens to be quite the affordable oyster. Pack your stuff, pick a place on the map, and make it happen this year. Bon voyage!
