Tina Turner will forever be an eternal music diva: the Queen of Rock. The singer died on May 24, 2023, at the age of 83, at her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland, according to a statement issued by her representative.
“With her, the world loses a music legend and role model,” the statement read. Tina had been battling bowel cancer for several years, which she was diagnosed with in 2016, in addition to a kidney transplant in 2017.

Who Was Tina Turner?
Tina Turner led a complicated life and, according to the introduction to her memoir, “the list of obstacles is long: an unhappy childhood, abandonment, a violent marriage, a stalled career, financial ruin, the untimely death of members of my family and multiple illnesses,” were part of her path, although that is not exactly what defines her.
Tina was born on November 26, 1939, and was registered as Anna Mae Bullock in Brownsville, Tennessee. The singer witnessed her parents’ abusive marriage and, from an early age, lived apart from them, moving in with her paternal grandparents, until years later they were reunited again. Tina attended Falgg Glove Elementary School in eighth grade, and it was there that she had her first musical experience at Nutbush Hill Baptist Church.
At the age of 13, Tina again separated from her parents to live with her grandmother in Georgeanna, and it was in her memoir that she expressed that she never felt her mother’s affection, indeed, that she felt she didn’t love her. “I was delivered in a windowless basement relegated to the colored women’s maternity ward at the county hospital. My mother, Zelma, was loving to my sister, but with me she was different. I knew she never loved me. That’s a heavy burden for a little girl.”
As a teenager, the singer was a domestic worker at Ripley’s, while also becoming a basketball player, but her life would change again after her grandmother passed away and her mother took her with her to St. Louis, where her sister was also staying. Tina graduated from Summer High School in 1958 and found work as a nurse’s aide in hopes of becoming a headliner, while at the same time, along with her sister, had nightclub gigs to earn more money.

When Tina Met Ike Turner
It was during this time when Tina attended the Manhattan Club and met Ike Turner and his band Kings of the Rhythm; she revealed that she was impressed with the music and talent of the man who would later become her husband. The singer joined the performances of Ike and his band to participate in the chorus, and in 1960 they released their first single, which was a hit in U.S. sales.
It was Ike who was in charge of baptizing the singer Tina Turner, besides starting to control her physically and mentally; they changed the name of the band to Ike & Tina Turner, and it was shortly after that they won their first Grammy thanks to their song ‘It’s Gonna Work out Fine.’
Tina and Ike married in Tijuana in 1962, and the musician gave his last name to the singer’s first child he had before falling in love with his colleague. Years later, the violence escalated, and Ike was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
In the mid-’70s, Ike’s cocaine addiction got out of control, and this ruined his relationship with Tina Turner; hours before performing at the Dallas Statler Hilton in Dallas, Texas, the two musicians fought until the singer was brutally beaten by her husband. This provoked the divorce of the couple, and they suspended all the concerts they had scheduled.
It was in 1978 that they confirmed their separation due to “unrecognizable differences” after sixteen years of marriage. Years later, Ike revealed that he allegedly never hit the singer, and also mentioned that Tina’s real name was Martha Nell Bullock and not Anna Mae Bullock.

A Solo Star is Born
Obviously, Tina Turner didn’t need any man to excel, so she started her solo career and, despite the hard work, in 1984, she positioned herself as one of the most successful singers worldwide. Her single ‘What’s Love Got to Do With It’ kept her at the top of the charts for several weeks, and was the lead single from her album Private Dancer, which today is a classic in the history of music.
The Beginning of the End
Tina Turner decided to retire from the stage in 2000 at the age of 61, but four years later, she released a compilation album of her hits that earned her a platinum record. From then until 2013, she had brief appearances and collaborations, even embarked on a tour at 69 years of age that ended in May 2009.
She bid farewell to music and acting in 2013 after 54 years of a great artistic career. The singer also renounced her U.S. citizenship to acquire Swiss citizenship and live in peace in Küsnacht. The music world is in mourning and the heavens are celebrating the passing of one of the greatest rock legends, or rather the queen.
