We have just lost one of the defining icons of music; the iconic Tina Turner passed at her home in Kusnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, according to an official statement. The ‘Queen of Rock’n Roll’ had been battling illness for the past years.
The statement issued by a representative added that she passed this Wednesday, May 24, after “a long illness.” “With her, the world loses a music legend and a role model,” also read the sad statement.
Although the statement doesn’t delve into the causes, Tina Turner was diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2016 and a year later received a kidney transplant. She also suffered a stroke and kidney failure in the past years. It’s still unknown if this permeated the health of the music and culture icon.
Who Was Tina Turner?
Tina Turner is one of the most loved singers in the world with a unique voice and a strong and characteristic presence on stage. She rose to fame in the sixties alongside her ex-husband Ike Turner with classic hits such as ‘River Deep’ and ‘Mountain High.’
After a very toxic relationship involving abuse, Tina Turner decided to seek a solo career demonstrating her unique talent. “My relationship with Ike was doomed the day he figured out I was going to be his moneymaker,” Tina Turner revealed in her 2018 biography My Love Story.
Among her biggest hits are ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It,’ The Best,’ and ‘Private Dancer.’ Throughout her career, she won 8 Grammy Awards and this past 2021, she was inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. She had been previously honored as part of the duo with Ike Turner in 1991.
