One of the greatest legends in the history of music ended his career on stage. Elton John gave his last live performance at the Tele2 Arena in Stockholm, Sweden. The grand closing of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour was in front of more than 30 thousand people, in this emblematic city for Elton John’s career, since it was here where he gave his first live concert in 1971, perhaps without imagining that he would become an idol for millions of people and a musical influence for dozens of bands, singers, and songwriters.
“Bennie and the Jets” was the hit chosen by the Brit to start the iconic concert, which will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the best by his fans. He continued with “Philadelphia Freedom,” “Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues,” “Border Song,” “I’m Still Standing,” “Tiny Dancer,” “Have Mercy On The Criminal,” and one of the best of his repertoire: “Rocket Man.”
“Good evening, Stockholm. Well, this is it. I’m very happy to be in Sweden and in this beautiful country to finish our Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, so it better be a good show. Here we go,” said Elton John to the euphoria of thousands of fans, who gave the singer a standing ovation. The concert lasted approximately two hours, and the legend thrilled and made his fans vibrate with each performance, who gathered to see him for the last time on stage, totally live.
“You have no idea how much that means to me. I’ve had the most wonderful career, beyond belief. Fifty-two years of sheer joy playing music, how lucky am I to play? But I wouldn’t be sitting here if it weren’t for you guys. You bought singles, records, and CDs, and more importantly, you bought concert tickets, and you know how I love playing live. Playing for you has been my reason for living, and you have been absolutely magnificent,” said an emotional Elton John to a sold-out crowd.
Every minute that passed, every song, every note, every ovation, had something special because the final moment was about to be consummated. Neither the musical genius, nor those present wanted it, but they enjoyed every moment of a unique presentation, for eternity.
“I will never forget them. I have played so many concerts, how could I forget? You are in my head, in my heart, and in my soul, and I thank you so much. I’ll never tour again,” said the living rock legend, the great Sir Elton John.
With the Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, Elton John performed 330 concerts in total. Europe, Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom welcomed him on their stages; this began in 2018 but was extended for five years because it was interrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic and a hip operation he underwent in 2021.
