In the chaos ahead of Hurricane Milton’s arrival in Florida, a heartbreaking scene unfolded.  On a section of Interstate 75 near Tampa, a Florida Highway Patrol trooper made a discovery that would tug at the heartstrings of people across the country—a dog, abandoned and tied to a fence, left to face the storm alone. With floodwaters rising around him, this poor pup had nowhere to go.

The scene was captured on video, showing the dog standing in a pool of water that had already reached his belly. Despite his fear, he barked at the approaching trooper, a cry for help that was heard loud and clear. The trooper, understanding the dog’s distress, responded gently, “I don’t blame you. It’s OK, buddy. It’s OK.”

After the Florida Highway Patrol rescued him, they shared an important message urging people not to abandon their pets during evacuations. The heartbreaking image of the dog, left alone in the storm’s path, resonated with animal lovers everywhere.

Thanks to the quick actions of the trooper and the compassionate care of the Leon County Humane Society in Tallahassee, the dog is now safe and starting the road to recovery. The Humane Society shared that the dog is “stressed and still decompressing” after his traumatic experience, but he’s in good hands as he begins to heal.

In honor of his incredible journey and the heroic efforts of those who saved him, the Humane Society has given the dog a new name: Trooper. It’s a fitting tribute to his strength and the Florida Highway Patrol officers who made sure he didn’t face the storm alone.

“We know that without the help of the Florida Highway Patrol, this dog wouldn’t have made it through,” the Humane Society shared in a heartfelt message. “We’re grateful the Troopers treated him so patiently and kindly during the rescue.”

While many people have expressed interest in adopting Trooper, the Humane Society is taking things slowly: they want to make sure he’s fully rehabilitated and ready for a loving forever home when the time is right.

“We have no idea what his life looked like before he was abandoned,” they said. “We want to be sure we know exactly what he needs before even considering adoption.”

Trooper’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience that animals have, even in the face of abandonment. It also highlights the importance of kindness, especially during life’s storms—both literal and metaphorical. Trooper may have been left behind, but now, thanks to the care and compassion of strangers, he has a bright future ahead.
