Two Accused of Stealing Banksy's Iconic 'Girl with Balloon'

Two men have been charged with the theft of a famous painting by graffiti artist Banksy from a London gallery. The Metropolitan Police (Met) announced on Friday, September 13, 2024, that Larry F., 47, and James L., 53, were arrested in connection with the heist, which took place last Sunday.

The incident occurred at an unnamed gallery on New Cavendish Street, in central London. The painting, titled “Girl with Balloon,” was the sole item stolen during the break-in. Fortunately, it has been recovered and returned to the gallery, according to the Met.

Larry F. and James L. were released on bail and are scheduled to appear in court in Kingston, southwest London, on October 9. Their arrest has sparked significant media interest, particularly given the graffiti artist’s elusive reputation.

Despite numerous attempts to unveil his identity, Banksy remains one of the art world’s most enigmatic figures. The Guardian speculated in 2003 that Banksy might be a 28-year-old from Bristol, with various theories suggesting he could be Robin Gunningham or even Robert Del Naja, frontman of the band Massive Attack.
