In a recent interview with The Independent, Will Ferrell opened up about his thoughts on transphobia while promoting his new documentary Will & Harper, which explores his decades-long friendship with comedy writer Harper Steele, who came out as transgender at the age of 61.
The documentary, now streaming on Netflix, is a heartfelt examination of their evolving bond and the challenges Steele has faced throughout her transition.
Will Ferrell’s Thoughts on Transphobia
Will Ferrell, known for his comedic roles in Anchorman and Elf, was asked by The Independent why transphobia persists. “I think we fear what we don’t know,” he stated. He expressed confusion over why some people feel threatened by the trans community, saying, “I don’t know why trans people are meant to be threatening to me as a cis male. Harper is finally who she was always meant to be. Why would you care if somebody’s happy?”
Will & Harper follows the duo as they hit the road together, traveling across the U.S. to confront some of the prejudices that Steele feared would affect her post-transition life. The film offers a touching portrayal of their friendship, focusing on personal rather than political themes. Steele reflects on how her transition has shaped their bond, asking Ferrell to simply “stand up for me” if she is misgendered in public.
The documentary balances humor with the emotional depth of Steele’s journey. Viewers can expect moments of levity, such as inside jokes between the two, but the core of the film lies in the exploration of Steele’s transition and how she navigates the complex emotions of coming out later in life. As Ferrell puts it, “If the trans community is a threat to you, I think it stems from not being confident or safe with yourself.”
Will & Harper steers clear of heavy-handed political messaging, opting instead to focus on the personal experiences of its subjects. Director Josh Greenbaum noted that they wanted to tell a “pure, simple story of two friends,” hoping that this approach might resonate with a broad audience, including those unfamiliar with the trans experience.
Will & Harper is available to stream on Netflix.
