Christian Bale’s outstanding body transformations

The Machinist (2004)

Perhaps his most famous transformation, the English actor went through a dangerous and drastic change to play an insomniac machine worker who is dealing with hallucinations.

According to IMDB, Bale dropped from about 173 pounds in weight down to about 110 pounds in weight to make this film. He wanted to drop down to 100 pounds, but they would not let him go below 120 out of fear that his health could be in danger. To achieve this, he ate one can of tuna and an apple.  He also started smoking to lose appetite. Then, he regained the weight for his role in Batman Begins (2005).

Batman Begins (2005)

Just the next year after filming The Machinist, Bale added 100 pounds of muscle to his body, so much even Christopher Nolan, the director of the film, asked him to drop a few pounds before starting to film. He told BBC he went directly into pizza and ice cream, eating 5 full meals consequently. It is obvious that Bale was going to need to bulk up to play Batman, but he worked too hard! He even got sick of the stomach and started getting rid of the carbs on his diet, as Nolan feared that the star of his movie would no longer fit within the Batsuit. At the end, he had to get rid of another 30 lbs.

American Psycho (2000)

This is the first film in which Christian Bale started his run on body transformations. Interpreting a narcissistic, shallow individual who is obsessed with his appearance, wealth, and status symbols and who later becomes a killer.  Christian Bale decided to model the main character, Patrick Bateman, after the one and only Tom Cruise.

As he told The Guardian, working out took over his life for the role. “I became fascinated with talking about the body, and diet, and the gym. It made me very judgmental of other people’s bodies as well” he said.

Vice (2018)

To portray former Vice President Dick Cheney in Vice, Christian Bale gained 45 pounds. He also shaved his head, bleached his eyebrows and he even did special exercises to thicken his neck.

The actor said it was the first time he did it in a “healthy way” as he had never before gone to a doctor or a nutritionist about gaining or losing weight for his roles.

“I went to somebody and they managed to get me up a good 40 pounds. It’s never healthy to put on that amount of weight in a short amount of time, but I did it in the healthiest manner.” he mentioned.

American Hustle (2013)

American Hustle tells the story of con man Irving Rosenfeld  and Sydney Prosser . Both are forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso, who pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia.

He was so drastic, actor Robert De Niro didn’t recognize Christian on set. When being told it was none other than Christian Bale, De Niro didn’t believe it, saying “Wow, he looks really different”, then nodded his head in approval.

The actor went crazy as he ate “literally anything that came my way.” He also told Sunday Times Culture: “I can’t keep doing it. I really can’t. My mortality is staring me in the face.”

Christian Bale will portray Frankenstein’s monster for ‘The Bride’, a new spin on classic tale Bride of Frankenstein. It is scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 3, 2025.
