Now, it’s not that Joaquin Phoenix’s take on the iconic villain was the catalyst for the new film; the announcement of a new Batman happened months ago. This only means there will be more movies based on Gotham’s favorite hero. So, let’s talk about the upcoming one, The Batman. All we know so far is that Robert Pattinson has been chosen as the new Dark Knight and, after a long casting process, yesterday Zoe Kravitz was finally confirmed to play Catwoman, the iconic anti-heroine.
Unlike the Batman movies, with a few exceptions, Catwoman hasn’t always been portrayed as the great comic character she is (sorry, Anne Hathaway, I like you, but nope). Having said that, it would seem that finding the right Selina Kyle a.k.a. Catwoman, was not easy, since it took the production a while to finally choose Kravitz. According to reports, there were other actresses auditioning for the role, like Zazie Beetz, Alicia Vikander, and Eiza González, but when they were paired with Pattinson to see their chemistry, the role went to Kravitz.
According to Matt Reeves, the film’s director, who has worked with the Batman universe since 2017, this movie won’t follow the classic Batman narratives we’re used to seeing. Instead, it will further explore Batman’s noir-like, detective side. So, hopefully, this film will breathe some fresh air into the story of the beloved superhero.
Pre-production for the film is expected to start sometime between late 2019 and the summer of 2020. The movie will be released in theaters on June 25, 2021.
