By now it should be clear that immigration is an important issue to many Americans, but while Trump vilifies and scapegoats immigrants from Mexico and Central America, and while many American “patriots” demand “respect for our laws,” it seems that this respect is demanded so long as its their borders, not Mexico’s.
@joyandjourneyMexico’s National Institute of Statistics and Geography estimates that a little under 800,000 American immigrants have now settled in Mexico. However, the US Embassy in Mexico City, which is in closer contact with American citizens, places the number closer to 1.5 million Americans. Either way, this makes people from the United States the largest immigrant group in Mexico by a long shot, for they make up 75 percent of all immigrants.
What’s most interesting about them is that Mexican authorities claim many of the American immigrants are probably undocumented, which is why the Mexican government’s estimates are somewhat unreliable and Mexicans know this… but it’s okay. Their guess is that most Americans have overstayed their visas. But don’t worry, no one will begin cracking down on them.
@internations.guadalajara Many of these Americans are expat retirees looking to make the most of their pension. Many of them are young people who enjoy the perks of dollars against a weaker currency. Half of these Americans are US-born kids who have returned to their parents’ home country, hopeful that things will turn around soon enough.
@the.weekday.warriors The high number of Americans now poses a problem for Mexican society: how to integrate these foreigners into society. The Mexican foreign minister now acknowledges that this small community of Mexican-Americans and of Americans is now a phenomenon to be taken into account. At least with regard to Americans, Mexico practices what it preaches. A particular town, San Miguel de Allende, 170 miles northwest of Mexico City, hosts so many American immigrants that its mayor delivers his annual State of the Municipality address in English and Spanish.
So, as you can see, Mexicans generally have a completely different attitude towards American immigrants than Americans have for Mexicans. Can you imagine a US mayor delivering an entire speech both in Spanish and English?
