It’s only April, but 2025 has already been rough on California, this time was San Diego’s turn. From intense weather events to political unrest, the Golden State hasn’t had much of a breather. And now, it’s the earth itself that has reminded everyone just how fragile things can be.
What We Know About the 5.2 Magnitude Earthquake in San Diego
Earlier today, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck near Julian, a small mountain town about an hour east of San Diego. It happened just after 10:00 AM local time and was strong enough to be felt all the way in Los Angeles. According to early reports, the shaking rattled shelves, caused light fixtures to sway, and sent a wave of anxiety across Southern California.

Emergency alerts were quickly sent to phones, advising residents to “drop, cover, and hold on.” Thankfully, no injuries or serious damages have been reported so far.
Even though authorities say there’s no major damage, the videos surfacing online have people seriously shaken. In some clips, furniture can be seen moving on its own, alarm systems blare in the background, and people are seen rushing to safety mid-livestream.

The California Governor, Gavin Newsom, has already been briefed. Meanwhile, emergency crews are out checking on local infrastructure, and seismologists continue to monitor for aftershocks, which are common after a quake of this size. So far, everything seems under control—but the fear remains.
