Imane Khelif, one of the most prominent athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, found herself at the center of a major controversy following her stunning debut.
When she defeated her Italian opponent, Angela Carini just 46 seconds into the match, it quickly drew attention. After her victory, social media and news platforms were flooded with false information and rumors suggesting that Khelif was transgender or had undergone a sex change, which, according to the baseless rumors, gave her an unfair advantage over her opponents.

The situation escalated when her opponent, a Hungarian boxer named Anna Lucca Hamori mocked Khelif on social media, comparing her to a beast ahead of their quarterfinal match. Additionally, the International Boxing Association’s controversial decision to award $100,000 to the Italian boxer who lost to Khelif further fueled the fire.
Imane Khelif Takes Action
Now, Khelif has officially filed a lawsuit in Paris for aggravated cyberbullying, accusing those responsible of fueling a “misogynistic, racist, and sexist campaign” against her.
Despite the ongoing controversies, Khelif reached the final and won gold in the 66 kg category after defeating her Chinese rival, Yang Liu.

Her lawyer, Me Nabil Boudi, issued a press release stating, “After winning a gold medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, boxer Imane Khelif has decided to embark on a new fight: one for justice, dignity, and honor.”
The legal complaint focuses on “acts of aggravated cyberbullying” and aims to combat “online hate.”
Paris 2024 Olympic Games Faces Hate
Khelif is not the only athlete facing gender-based criticism. Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting has also encountered similar scrutiny.
The Taiwan Sports Administration recently protested against the International Boxing Association’s handling of the controversy surrounding Lin’s gender at the Paris Games, and the Taiwanese Olympic committee is reportedly considering legal action as well.
Both Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting have hyperandrogenism, a condition where their genetic makeup includes XY chromosomes, leading to higher levels of testosterone than the average woman
Luckily, Lin Yu-ting also went on to win Olympic gold this Saturday, showing the world that hate won’t keep you from winning if you have talent, discipline, heart, and courage.
