Gypsy Rose Is Free, But What Happened to Her Accomplice and Ex Nicholas Godejohn?

Thanks to parole, Gypsy Rose Blanchard was able to leave prison three years before her original release date. This Thursday 28, Gypsy left the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri early in the morning with a new life ahead. She was serving a 10-year sentence for her participation in the murder of her mother Clauddine “Dee Dee” Blanchard, in 2015.

Gypsy didn’t do it herself. As a matter of fact, she didn’t actually kill her mother; she convinced her internet boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn to do so and then escaped with him in a desperate attempt to taste freedom at last. However, they were caught shortly, and the couple was separated. But what happened to Nicholas?

Who Is Nicholas Godejohn?

Not much is known about the life of Nicholas Godejohn before the tragic events of 2015, other than he lived in Wisconsin. Although he was slightly older than Gypsy Rose when the crime was committed, neither of them had been able to mature in their young adulthood.

Before meeting Gypsy Rose, Nicholas had already a long history of mental illness and even a criminal record for an exposure incident. His mental instability was just the spark that fueled a toxic yet heartbreaking relationship that ended in the infamous crime. He was only 26 years old when he “saved” Gypsy Rose from the claws of her “monstrous” mother.

How Did Gypsy Rose and Nicholas Godejohn Meet?

Godejohn’s path intersected with Gypsy Rose Blanchard, his future accomplice, through an online Christian dating site. The young and troubled couple had a two-year online relationship before meeting in person. Their virtual connection blossomed into an unconventional romance, with Gypsy painting a picture of being trapped by Dee Dee, her Munchausen syndrome by proxy victim mother.

Their online exchanges started with romantic plans of marrying and forming a family; among the conversations between them, it can be seen that they had already chosen the names of their future kids. However, the relationship soon escalated to discussions of escape, eventually morphing into a sinister plot against Dee Dee.

After two years of secret and constant exchanges online, Gypsy Rose and Nicholas Godejohn finally met on a date at the movies in 2015. The second time they saw each other in person was the night of the assassination of Dee Dee. Whether Godejohn was a willing pawn or genuinely believed he was freeing Gypsy from twisted captivity remains a point of intense debate.

The Teen Clyde and Bonnie?

Gypsy Rose Blanchard’s story is filled with tragedy, manipulation, and ultimately, a desperate cry for freedom. From a young age, Gypsy’s life was shrouded in a cloak of manufactured illness. Her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, convinced doctors and the public that Gypsy suffered from a litany of debilitating conditions, forcing her into wheelchairs, feeding tubes, and constant medical interventions.

Nicholas traveled from his home to meet his beloved, with whom he waited until nightfall to murder his mother-in-law, in the early hours of June 12, 2015. According to police data, Dee Dee received 17 stab wounds. The couple escaped to Wisconsin, while Dee Dee’s body was found by members of the police, who were alerted by several neighbors who said that the girl may have been kidnapped by her mother’s murderer.

The young couple was arrested, and in the course of the investigation, the whole truth came out: all the abuses to which the young woman was subjected by her mother and her reasons for asking for support from a stranger on the Internet to free herself from her captor. Gypsy and Nicholas were placed in protective custody by security and then put on trial.

Where Is Nicholas Godejohn Now?

The prosecution depicted Godejohn as an infatuated pawn, swayed by Gypsy’s carefully crafted portrayal of her mother as a monster. His defense countered, arguing for diminished capacity due to Asperger’s and mental instability, further complicated by Gypsy’s alleged manipulation.

The trial became a battleground for understanding intent and culpability. Did Godejohn act out of genuine belief in a noble cause, or was he simply a lovestruck puppet dancing to Gypsy’s tune? In 2019, the gavel fell. Godejohn received a life sentence for first-degree murder and armed criminal action, while Gypsy pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and received a 10-year sentence.

Unlike Gypsy, Nicholas was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole (this allowed Gypsy Rose to be released three years earlier). Besides that, he was also sentenced to an additional 25 years for armed criminal action. Today, Nicholas Godejohn is still serving his life sentence at the Potosi Correctional Center in Missouri.

Do Gypsy Rose and Nicholas Godejohn’s Relationship After Prison?

The toxic love story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and Nicholas Godejohn was short-lived. After they were arrested the couple was separated, and both faced their trials and sentencings on their own. After this, their relationship deteriorated rapidly, especially after Nicholas learned about the engagement of Gypsy Rose and Ryan Anderson.

Sadly, Nicholas remained loyal and in love with Gypsy for several years. In an interview made in 2019, shortly before the engagement announcement, Nicholas said: “From the very beginning, I just knew we were soulmates. Those five days when I was actually with her, physically with her, those five days were the most intense, magical, and awe-inspiring days I’ve ever had.”

Although it’s clear that Nicholas did everything for love, many still wonder what he really meant for her. Nicholas likely represented a possibility of freedom, but close sources to the Blanchard family are certain that Gypsy was as infatuated with Nicholas as he was with her.

Gypsy Rose and Nicholas were engaged for some time; however, being apart eventually broke with all the hopes of having a life together. They had a short reunion in the Summer of 2022, but Gypsy Rose was already married to Ryan Scott Anderson, whom she met through correspondence.
